Jones' Big Game Powers Owls to Victory Over Post

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University volleyball team defeated Post University, 3-1. The Owls improve to 6-0 on the season, while the Eagles fall to 2-4.

Taylor Jones' (Middletown, N.Y.) playmaking abilities were on full display as she collected a career-high 52 assists for Southern Connecticut en route to the Owls sixth-straight win to begin the 2021 season. Gabriela Gaibur (Monroe, N.Y), Abigail Epstein (Crystal River, Fla.), and Erika Benson (Kings Park, N.Y.) led the Owls offense in double-digit kills. Gaibur tallied a season- and game-high 19 kills and 12 digs. Epstein notched a season-high 17 kills to go along with five digs and four blocks. Benson registered 10 kills and a career-high seven blocks.

Lillee Olson (Savage, Minn.) and Krishnalei So'oto (Oceanside, Calif.) also chipped in 12 digs each in the Owls victory.
 
Notes
  • Taylor Jones had 52 assists through four sets played. The last rookie to tally more than 45 assists in a game was Kailyn O'Neal who tallied 48 on Nov. 9, 2018 against Saint Anselm. The last player to tally 52 assists in a game was Tea Carter on Nov. 6, 2019 against New Haven.
  • Taylor Jones has recorded double-digit assists in all six games for the Owls this season. Her previous career-high is 25, which was set on Sept. 3 against Queens.
  • Gabriela Gaibur has registered double-digit digs in all six games this season. She tallied her season-high 15 digs against Nyack. She leads all Owls with 73 digs on the season.
  • Gaibur became the first Southern player with at least 10 digs in six consecutive games to begin the season since Morgan Carman did so in eight straight games to begin the 2014 season.
  • Gaibur tied a career-high in kills with 19 against Post on Sept. 10. Her previous career-high was on Nov. 16, 2019 against Stonehill.
  • Gaibur tallied her third double-double of the season with 19 kills and 12 digs against Post on Sept. 10.
  • Erika Benson broke a career-high in blocks with seven against Post on Sept. 10. Her previous career-high of five blocks came on Nov. 17, 2019 against Southern New Hampshire.
  • Benson has tallied at least one block in each of the Owls six games this season.
  • This was the first game this season that the Owls have had three players in double-digit kills and three players in double-digit digs. The last time the Owls had three players in double-digit kills and double-digit digs was against Assumption on Nov. 9, 2019.
