Volleyball Sweeps Nyack, Wins Fifth Straight to Begin Season

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University volleyball swept Nyack College to remain undefeated through the first five games of the season. The Owls improve to 5-0 on the season, while the Warriors fall to 0-1.

Graduate student Abigail Epstein (Crystal River, Fla.) had a game-high 10 kills along with a game-high three blocks to help power the Owls to a three set victory. Gabriela Gaibur (Monroe, N.Y.) picked up a game-high 15 digs and six kills. Heliceliz Rivera (Corozal, Puerto Rico) and Taylor Jones (Middletown, N.Y.) led the play making for Southern Connecticut as they notched 15 assists and 10 assists, respectively. 

Southern Connecticut out shined much of Nyack's play, as they led in total team kills (36), aces (9), blocks (5), assists (33), and digs (49). 

Notes
  • Jamie Allen recorded a career-high four service aces from the line. Her previous career-high came on Sept. 4, 2021 against Saint Rose where she had three.
  • Gabriela Gaibur has registered double-digit digs in all five games this season. She tallied her season-high 15 digs against Nyack. She leads all Owls with 61 digs on the season. 
  • Gaibur became the first Southern player with at least 10 digs in five consecutive games to begin the season since Morgan Carman did so in eight straight games to begin the 2014 season.
  • Taylor Jones has recorded double-digit assists in all five games for the Owls this season. Her career-high is 25, which was set on Sept. 3 against Queens.
  • Heliceliz Rivera has recorded double-digit assists in two-straight games. Her career-high is 18, which was set on Sept. 4 against Saint Rose.
  • Erika Benson has tallied at least one block in each of the Owls five games this season. 
  • The Owls are 5-0 at home to start the 2021 season. The last time the Owls won their first five matches at Pelz Gym to begin a season was 2018.
