SCSU Volleyball Upsets Bentley To Advance To NE10 Semifinals

WALTHAM, Mass. – Northeast 10 Conference Championship tournament No. 7 seed Southern Connecticut volleyball upset No. 2 Bentley on the Falcons' home court, 3-1, to advance to the NE10 Championship Semifinals at the Dana Center in Waltham, Mass. The Owls will face No. 3-seeded Adelphi on Saturday, Nov. 12 in Springfield, Mass., hosted by American International.

All-NE10 pick Gabriela Gaibur (Monroe, N.Y.) led an Owls' lineup that handed Bentley its first loss of the year on their home court and also topped the Falcons for the first time in Southern's NE10 tournament history. Proving "three time's a charm", Southern lost in each of the last two seasons in the NE10 Quarters to Bentley before pulling the first round upset.

Southern took the first two sets, 25-23 and 25-15, while controlling the offensive and defensive end of the match, before Bentley took the third set. Southern pulled away in the fourth set to seal the victory.

Gaibur, a NE10 First Team selection last season, led the charge with 21 kills and 10 digs for her 13th double-double of the season. Gaibur's 21 kills are the second-most this season in a four-set match, and her fourth 20-kill performance of the season. In addition, her performance against Bentley gives her 860 kills for her career, which stands as the fourth-most in program history, and with 1,001 career digs is just the sixth player in program history to reach the 1,000-dig mark. She's also the third player in SCSU history to reach 850 kills and 1,000 digs in her career.

In addition to Gaibur, four other Owls had six-or-more kills, including Kacey Deecher (Granby, Mass.) and Sara Enright (Yorba Linda, Calif.) with seven while Payton Reis (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) and Heliceliz Rivera (Corazol, Puerto Rico) had six apiece. Rivera continued her all-round play as she totaled 25 assists and 14 digs while also recording three blocks while Reis, who ranks among the NE10 blocks leaders, finished with four. Freshman Sofia Suarez Ramos (Canovanas, Puerto Rico) had four blocks as well while Deecher and Enright both had two blocks, each. As a team, Southern recorded nine blocks in the win against Bentley.

Aubrey Villena (San Diego, Calif.), the Owls' service ace leader, tallied four in the game while also leading Southern with 19 digs. Taylor Jones (Middletown, N.Y.) finished with 16 assists and eight digs.

Southern improved to 5-3 all-time in the NE10 Quarterfinals and will face Adelphi for the first time in tournament history. The Owls are 2-2 all-time in the semifinals with wins against Saint Anselm in 2017 and 2018, the latter of which led to the Owls' first conference championship.
