SCSU Volleyball Clinches NE10 Tournament Spot With Win At Saint Michael's

COLCHESTER, VT. – Southern Connecticut volleyball picked up a crucial Northeast 10 Conference win with a 3-1 victory at Saint Michael's. The Owls' win at Saint Michael's give them a record of 5-6 in conference play and clinches the seventh seed in the upcoming NE10 Championship tournament. 

Gabriela Gaibur (Monroe, N.Y.) led Southern with 15 kills to go with 11 digs and a service ace while Kacey Deecher (Granby Mass.) had 12 kills, while hitting a game-high .345, and three aces. Payton Reis (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) had eight kills and four blocks in the Owls' win. Heliceliz Rivera (Corozal, Puerto Rico) also posted a double-double with a team-high 24 assists and 11 digs.

Southern took the first game, 25-22, after opening the set with an 8-3 run. Saint Michael's responded with an 9-3 run to take a 12-11 lead. Saint Michael's led by as many as four points, 18-14, before Southern outscored the Purple Knights, 11-4, to end the set and take a 1-0 lead.

Saint Michael's tied the match after a breaking a 17-17 tie in the second set, outscoring the Owls' 8-3 to take the second frame. The third set saw the Owls use a 9-3 run to take an 18-12 lead before closing out the set to the tune of 25-17.

The fourth saw both teams trade points to a 13-13 tie. After Southern took a 17-14 lead, St. Michael's responded to pull within a point, 18-17. The Owls scored five of the next six points to take a 23-18 lead but the Purple Knights put another run together to pull within two points, 23-21. In the end, kills by Sofia Suarez Ramos and Reis ended the Purple Knights' night.

Southern will look to pull itself up to .500 when they take on Saint Anselm in Manchester, N.H. on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. Souithern is set to open NE10 Championship Tournament play on Thursday, Nov. 10 at second-seeded Bentley.
