SCSU Women’s Basketball Tops District of Columbia, 67-55

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Southern Connecticut women's basketball topped the University of the District of Columbia, 67-55, in a non-conference matchup in New Haven, Conn. on Thursday, Dec. 29, 2022. The win boosts the Owls up to 7-3 overall, while the Firebirds drop to 6-7. 

Katie Williamson (Dublin, Ireland) led the Owls in both points (19) and rebounds (10) to earn her third double-double of the season. She also is credited with four assists and two steals in the win. Isabella Santoro (Durham, Conn.) tabbed 16 points and nine rebounds. Zoë Amalbert (Nanuet, N.Y.) dropped 10 points, going 2-of-5 from the three-point line. 

Southern Connecticut rocketed off to take the upper hand in the first quarter. The Owls started off strong scoring 13 points in the first five minutes. Katie Williamson contributed five of her points during this period. At the closure quarter, the Owls led 15-9.

The second quarter produced more of the same story. Southern never took more than an eight point lead with the Firebirds edging as close as three points behind at the 8:27 and 4:40 minute marks. At the halftime buzzer, the Owls led by seven points, 34-27. Isabella Santoro dropped seven points in the quarter, while Ashley Evans (Londonderry, N.H.) and Hope Fox (Guilford, Ind.) each converted four points.

The Firebirds made their presence known in the second half, coming as close as one point behind the Owls just one minute into the third quarter before tying up the game two minutes later, 34-34. Katie Williamson responded with a layup just ten seconds later to start an eight point streak of unanswered points by the Owls. Williamson scored eight points in the quarter, while Zoë Amalbert converted her second three-pointer of the game. The Owls led at the closure of the third quarter, 47-40.

The Owls increased their lead in the fourth quarter to as large as a fifteen point advantage. Alexa Kellner (Stamford, Conn.) hit a crowd roaring three-pointer from just inside the half line to boost the Owls up to an 11 point advantage with five and a half minutes remaining, 57-46. With just over one minute remaining, the Owls took their largest lead of 15 points off a jumper by Katie Williamson, 67-52. At the final buzzer, the game concluded with an undeniable victory by the Owls ending with a score of 67-55.

The Owls are back in action to host American International College on Saturday, Dec. 31 at 1:30 p.m. to close out 2022 on a New Years Eve finale.
