SCSU Gymnastics Tops Rhode Island College, Breaks Vault Record

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University gymnastics defeated Rhode Island College, 189.500-184.650, in a dual meet at the James Moore Field House.

The Owls started the afternoon strong, breaking the program record in the Vault event with a score of 48.475, eclipsing the previous mark of 48.450. Hannah Stahlbrodt (Cicero, N.Y.) led the Owls with three top-three finishes in the Vault, Bars and Beam, including a first-place finish on the Bars. Freshmen Brooke Burkhart (Haymarket, Va.) and Hanna Zebdi (Ashburn, Va.) tied for first place on the Vault.

VAULT
  • The Owls' program record 48.475 broke the previous record of 48.450 set on Mar. 10, 2019 in a quad meet at University of Maryland that also featured Brown and Penn.
  • Both Burkhart and Zebdi posted career-bests in the event, totaling 9.775 each. Burkhart posted 9.750 in back-to-back meets while Zebdi also had a personal-best of 9.750 last week at Yale.
  • Cassidy Girolamo (Newington, Conn.) and Stahlbrodt were tied for second in the event, both scoring a 9.675.
  • Freshman Lexi Bracher (Oakton, Va.) scored a 9.575 for fifth place.
BARS
  • The Owls took the Bars competition, edging RIC, 48.075-43.450.
  • Stahlbrodt and Leon tied for first in the event after posting matching 9.775 scores.
  • Chelsea Baker (Neptune, N.J.) scored a 9.575 for third place while Audrey Arnold had a 9.50 for fourth.
  • Delaney Fields (Denver, Colo.) finished fifth with a score of 9.450.
BEAM
  • Rhode Island won the Beam event, 47.350-46.500.
  • Stahlbrodt was the Owls' top finisher with a 9.600 for third place while freshman Angel Lee (Chino Hills, Calif.) had a score of 9.475 for fifth place.
  • Freshman Alexa Melanson (Moncton, New Brunswick) finished sixth with a 9.425.
FLOOR
  • Rhode Island also took the Floor event with a score of 47.100-46.450.
  • Noely Macias (Fitchburg, Mass.) finished second overall with a score of 9.650, which matched her season-best score.
  • Zebdi posted her second top-four finish of the day with a score of 9.625 while Girolamo was fifth at 9.425.
UP NEXT
Southern is back in action on Sunday, Feb. 13 when it travels to Yale to compete in the Don Tonry Invitational which also features Bridgeport and Springfield. The event commences at 1 p.m. at the John J. Lee Amphitheater.
