Women's Basketball Heads to New Haven on Wednesday, Feb. 16

The Southern Connecticut women's basketball team will play the third game of their road stint a little closer to home when it travels to the University of New Haven on Wednesday, Feb. 16. The Owls currently sit in fourth in the Southwest Division of the Northeast 10, while the Chargers sit in seventh. 

New Haven Athletics Spectator Policy
In compliance with the university's policy, all spectators – regardless of vaccination status – must wear a mask inside Charger Gymnasium and all surrounding areas. Spectators should also maintain 3-feet of physical distancing. Access to the court will not be permitted.

Last Time Out
Southern edged Saint Michael's College in overtime, 67-53, in Colchester, Vt. The Owls were paced by junior Alexa Kellner who had a game-high 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting from three-point range. Kellner also grabbed six boards, a steal and a block. Senior Zoë Amalbert had 16 points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals, while graduate student Jessica Fressle had 13 points, 12 rebounds, four blocks, and two steals.

All-Time Against New Haven: 28-45
Last Time They Met: These two met at the beginning of December as the Owls took the victory, 83-64, at home. Jessica Fressle had 26 points along with 14 rebounds, four assists and four steals. Patricia Conroy shot 75-percent from three-point range en route to 21 points, while Zoë Amalbert shot 50-percent from the field with 17 points, 10 assists, and two steals.

Matchup Preview
  • Southern is 3-2 in their last five games. They captured wins over Saint Anselm, 105-69, and Pace, 62-44, both at home, and most recently against Saint Michael's, 67-53, on the road.
  • New Haven is 2-3 in its last five games. They picked up a win at home against Saint Rose, 74-62, and a win on the road at American International, 49-36. Their losses include: a 69-53 loss to Le Moyne and a 62-50 loss against Southern New Hampshire, both at home, and a loss to Bentley, 80-61, on the road.
  • Both teams are coming off long stretches of games having played five games each in a nine-day span.
  • Jessica Fressle and Zoë Amalbert have continued to be consistent presences for the Owls on the floor. In her last five games, Fressle has averaged a double-double of 19.2 points per game and 11.8 rebounds per game, while shooting 53.7-percent from the field and 68.1-percent from three-point range. In her last five games, Amalbert has averaged 12.8 points per game and 5.8 assists per game, while shooting 42.8-percent from three-point range.
  • Alexa Kellner has also contributed greatly off the bench for the Owls. In her last five games, Kellner has shot 71.4-percent from the field and 68.8-percent from three-point range.
  • The Chargers have been paced by three players who are averaging double-digit points. Aurora Deshaies is the only player on the New Haven roster averaging a double-double of 10.8 points per game and 10.2 rebounds per game. Deshaies is also shooting an impressive 52-percent from the field.
  • Camryn DeBose and Brie Pergola have also been mainstays, averaging 13.5 points per game and 11.0 points per game, respectively. DeBose has also registered 55 steals and 10 blocks this season.

  • Zoë Amalbert is first in the conference in total assists with 133 and first in assists per game with 6.3. 
  • Jessica Fressle is second in rebounds per game (10.9) and fifth in the conference in points per game (17.0). Fressle is also third in free throws made (98-125), second in total rebounds with 228 and fifth in points (358).
  • Alexa Kellner is sixth in the conference in three-point shooting percentage (39.7).
  • As a team, the Owls are first in the conference in three-pointers made (174), first in assists with 16.7 per game, fourth in points per game (67.0), and fifth in free throw percentage (74.7).

  • Zoë Amalbert is fourth overall in assists per game (6.3) and tied for sixth in total assists (133).
  • Jessica Fressle is 17th in rebounds per game (10.9).
  • As a team, the Owls are 19th in assists per game (16.7), and 36th in three-pointers made (174).
