How It Happened

  • Stonehill jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first minute and a half of play. Southern responded with a 7-2 run of their own to gain their first lead just under halfway through the game. The Skyhawks finished the quarter outscoring the Owls, 14-2, and led by nine.
  • Southern started the second quarter on a 5-0 run that cut Stonehill's lead to four. Both sides would grab baskets on each of the next two possessions with the Skyhawks leading, 28-22. Stonehill grabbed the last two baskets of the quarter to extend their lead to 10 heading into halftime.
  • Scoring was quiet in the early stages of the third quarter with both teams not grabbing a basket until roughly two minutes in. Jessica Fressle cut the Skyhawks lead to single-digits with a layup at the 7:10 mark, 34-26. Stonehill snagged five-straight points before Amalbert and Alexa Kellner (Stamford, Conn.) grabbed a pair of layups. The Skyhawks closed the final minute and a half of the frame with an 8-3 run, which gave them their largest lead to that point, 49-33.
  • Both sides traded shots to start the fourth quarter as neither scored in two-straight basket until the 6:47 mark when Stonehill picked up five-points on back-to-back baskets, 59-38, and obtained their largest lead of the game. Despite the Owls outscoring the Skyhawks, 9-6, in the remaining minutes of the game, Stonehilll's poised play helped them to victory at home.
