SCSU Men's Swimming & Diving Wins 2022 Northeast 10 Conference Championship

2/20/2022 11:37:00 PM

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – After trailing Bentley for the first three days of the 2022 Northeast 10 Conference Championships, the Southern Connecticut State University Men's Swimming & Diving team pulled away early on the fourth day and never looked back. The Owls title is its first since 2018, which was the last time the event was hosted at Bruce Hutchinson Natatorium, and denies the Falcons the three-peat. The Owls' 2022 title is their 14th since joining the NE10 in 2003.

The Owls posted a final score of 695.5, edging Bentley's 671. Chandler Tucker was honored as the NE10 Male Swimmer of the Meet after capturing five NE10 Championships as well as two Silver medals. Andrew Buehler was named the NE10 Male Diver of the Meet for the second-straight season after winning both the 1 Meter and 3 Meter Diving Championship.

Heading into the fourth day, it was believed that the championship would go down to the wire, decided in the final race of the tournament. Instead, the Owls delivered in preliminaries and claimed four of the top six spots in the 200 Yard Backstroke event. Chandler Tucker, Timothy Kanaley and Kobe Dominguez then swept the top three spots, and Derek Melanson grabbed fifth, to give the Owls the lead for good.

Before the Owls dominated the 200 Backstroke event, Southern placed four swimmers in the top 10 in the 1,650 Yard Freestyle, including a Silver-medal finish for Dylan Prescher at 16:38.11 followed by Evan Bombery in third place for the Bronze at 16:47.28. With the duo combining for 25 points, they outscored Bentley's Gold Medalist Andrew Matjucha and pulled within 2.5 points.

In the backstroke event, Tucker won his third Gold medal of the championships, going a perfect 3-for-3 in individual events, while adding two more in the 200 and 800 Freestyle Relays. Tucker posted a time of 1:50.80 – four seconds better than his seed time – followed by Kanaley at 1:55.78 and Dominguez at 1:56.01. Melanson was close-behind at 1:59.48.

Following that race, the energized Owls continued to rack up points. First, in the 100 Yard Freestyle, Franklin Kuhn captured his fifth medal of the weekend when he shot past two swimmers on the final leg to finish second with a time of 45.97. The 200 Yard Breaststroke event was the exclamation point on the weekend and saw McCalister Milne pass Bentley's Tanner Eisenhut over the last 25 yards to claim his second Gold medal in his first NE10 Championships of his career. Bobby Hahn also provided the last punch, finishing third at 2:08.66. In the final race of the weekend, Kuhn, Tyler Cusano, Milne and Tucker finished second with a time of 3:06.39.

For the weekend, Southern captured 21 medals, including 10 Bronze, six Silver and five Bronze. Tucker and Kuhn won seven medals each while Tucker won five Gold medals, while Kuhn captured three. Milne also won three Gold medals including individual Championships in the 400 Yard IM and 200 Yard Breaststroke, to go-along with two Silvers, while Henry Velazquez captured four medals for the Owls.
