Women's Basketball Opens NE10 Tournament At Home Against Assumption on Saturday, Feb. 26

Southern Connecticut women's basketball will host Assumption in the first round of the Northeast 10 Conference Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 26 at Moore Field House. The Owls earned the fourth seed in the Southwest Division, while Assumption earned the fifth seed in the Northeast Division.
 
Spectator Policy
In compliance with the university's policy, spectators will be permitted regardless of vaccination status and will be required to wear a mask inside Moore Field House and all surrounding areas at all times. Spectators should also maintain 3-feet of physical distancing between parties. Access to the main level and court will not be permitted, and all seating will be located on the second floor. 

All-Time Record Against Assumption: 22-19
Last Time They Met: These two sides met during the regular season on Jan. 25, where the Greyhounds captured the victory, 76-48, at Laska Gymnasium in Worcester. Jessica Fressle led the Owls with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Katie Williamson had nine points, six rebounds, and a block, while Delaney Connors had nine points, six rebounds, and a steal. 
 
All-Time Postseason Results Against Assumption 
  • These two programs have squared off four times in postseason play. The Owls have captured three of the last four victories.
  • The last time SCSU has faced Assumption in postseason play was in the 2015-16 season when they squared off in the quarterfinals.
  • This is the first time in 21 years that Southern has faced Assumption in the first round, and only the second time in program history.
  • Since switching to a divisional structure ahead of the 2013-14 season, these two teams have faced each other just once in the quarterfinals.  
  • Postseason matchup history:

    • 2007 – Quarterfinals (SCSU 59, ASM 42)

The Owls in the NE10 Tournament
  • Southern sports a 16-14 record in 30 NE10 postseason tournament games.  
  • The Owls last appearance in the NE10 tournament was a first round loss to Merrimack College, 75-62, on the road in North Andover, Mass. during the 2018-19 season.
  • The last time the Owls hosted a home postseason game was during the 2017-18 season. They defeated Southern New Hampshire, 75-64, in the quarterfinals before falling to Bentley in the semifinals, 64-51.

Matchup Preview 
  • The Owls are 2-3 in their last five outings. Southern has been on the road for all five of those games. They picked up wins at Saint Michael's (67-53 OT) and Saint Rose (55-46), before dropping contests to Le Moyne (59-49), New Haven (71-63), and Stonehill (65-46).  
  • Assumption finished out the last five games of the regular season with a 3-2 record. They picked up victories against Saint Michael's (67-57), Bentley (68-62), and Franklin Pierce (52-47). Their losses were to Saint Anselm (60-47) and Stonehill (65-51).
  • Jessica Fressle is averaging a double-double of 16.8 points per game and 10.9 rebounds per game. In her last five games, Fressle has averaged a solid 14.4 points per game and 10.2 rebounds per game.  
  • Zoë Amalbert's ability to make plays is what makes the guard dangerous. She leads the conference in total assists and assists per game, while averaging 13.3 points per game. She has at least three assists in 23 of her 24 games played this season. 
  • Delaney Connors has been a solid presence for the Owls contributing greatly on the offensive front. This season, Connors is averaging 11.5 points per game, while shooting 39-percent from the field and averaging 3.0 assists per game and 5.0 rebounds per game. She has also hit double-figures in points in 13 of her games this season and topped the 20-point mark twice. 
  • Meghan Cramb was one of Assumption's best player against the Owls earlier this season. She picked up 16 points, while shooting 41.7-percent from the field and 44.4-percent from three-point range.
  • Another player that was hot against the Owls was Marina Callahan. Despite the first-year player only averaging 7.5 points per game and 5.2 rebounds per game this season, she picked up 14 points, while shooting 45-percent from the field and a perfect 2-for-2 from three-point range. She also grabbed 10 rebounds, five assists, two blocks, and a steal in the showing earlier this season.

Player Notes 
  • With Jessica Fressle's 1,000th point against Stonehill on Feb. 20, she joined fellow recruitment classmates Kiana Steinauer and Imani Wheeler in the 1,000 point club. 
  • This was just the second time in program history that a trio from the same recruitment class reached 1,000 career points each. It was last done by Gena DePeano, Cindy Beaudreau, and Kim Osborne between 1980 and 1984. 
  • Fressle now sits 23rd all-time in program history in career points. The last player to reach 1,000 career points was now-assistant coach Imani Wheeler, who reached the feat in 2020. Fressle also registered her 500th career rebound against Stonehill on Feb. 20.
  • Zoë Amalbert's 143 assists this season are sixth all-time in program history for single-season assists. With three assists against Stonehill, she surpassed Nicole Grossbard, who had 142 during the 2014-15 season. 
  • Delaney Connors matched a career-high in steals with three against Stonehill. Her career-high was originally set on Nov. 11, 2021 against Caldwell. 
  • Zoë Amalbert has at least three assists in 23 of her 24 games played this season.

  • Zoë Amalbert is first in the conference in total assists with 143 and first in assists per game with 6.0.  
  • Jessica Fressle is third in rebounds per game (10.9) and fifth in the conference in points per game (16.8). Fressle is also third in free throws made (109-138), third in total rebounds with 261 and fifth in points (404). 
  • Alexa Kellner is eighth in the conference in three-point shooting percentage (38.2). 
  • As a team, the Owls are first in the conference in three-pointers made (194), first in assists with 16.1 per game, fourth in points per game (65.5), and fifth in free throw percentage (74.9). 
 
Assumption
  • Jalyn Armstrong is first in the conference in field goal shooting percentage (54.5).
  • Lauren Hammersley and Meghan Cramb are third (40.0) and fourth (38.9), respectively, in three-point shooting percentage.
  • As a team, the Greyhounds are seventh in the conference in field goal percentage (39.1) and sixth in blocks per game (3.7).
 
The Owls in the NCAA 
  • Zoë Amalbert is sixth overall in assists per game (6.0) and eighth in total assists (143). 
  • Jessica Fressle is 20th in rebounds per game (10.9), 20th in total rebounds (261), and 25th in free throws made (109). 
  • As a team, the Owls are 27th in assists per game (16.1), tied for 29th in three-pointers made (194), and tied for 45th in total assists (386).
