The Southern Connecticut women's basketball team will play back-to-back Northeast 10 Conference games this weekend. First, they will host American International College on Saturday, Feb. 5 before hosting Saint Anselm College on Sunday, Feb. 6. AIC sits fourth in the Southwest Division of the NE10 with the Owls behind them in fifth, while Saint Anselm is third in the Northeast Division.
Spectator Policy
The Southern Connecticut Athletic Department have announced an update to its Spectator Policy. Effective Feb. 5, attendance will be limited to two guests per SCSU student-athlete and members of the coaching staff. At this time, no visiting team spectators will be permitted in Moore Field House for contests/scrimmages. All attendees must wear a mask regardless of vaccination status at all times indoors and will be asked to adhere to all SCSU Campus COVID guidelines.
Last Time Out
The Owls defeated Le Moyne at Moore Field House, 62-51. Graduate student Jessica Fressle led the way for Southern with 17 points, 10 rebounds, three steals, and two blocks. Senior Zoë Amalbert recorded 12 points, five assists, and two blocks. Senior Delaney Connors registered seven assists, while sophomore Katie Williamson notched five rebounds and three blocks.
All-Time Against AIC: 14-20
Last Time They Met: These two squads met earlier this season where the Owls took a 61-58 victory in Springfield, Mass. Delaney Connors led the way for the Owls offensively with a game-high 20 points and added nine rebounds, while Jessica Fressle recorded 18 points and 15 rebounds.
All-Time Against Saint Anselm: 16-11
Last Time They Met: Saint Anselm took the victory in the last outing between these two squads, 64-55, on Feb. 1, 2020.
Matchup Previews
Southern Connecticut
- Jessica Fressle will be the player to watch on the home team's side. This season she is averaging a double-double of 17.0 points per game and 11.1 rebounds per game, in addition to 2.0 steals per game. From the field, she is shooting 40-percent and 81-percent from the free throw line.
- Fressle has double-digit points in 13 of the Owls 14 games this season. In her last three games, she is averaging 17.7 points per game, 12.3 rebounds per game, and 2.3 steals per game, in addition to grabbing a block in two of those games. She has seven double-doubles to date as well including her last two games (25 points, 15 rebounds against Franklin Pierce and 16 points and 14 rebounds against Assumption).
- After a string of postponements, the Owls are searching for their first win since mid-December when they took down Caldwell in overtime on the road, 75-72.
American International
- The Yellow Jackets have won back-to-back conference games at home against Saint Michael's College (58-43) and Adelphi University (71-56).
- AIC is 3-3 in Southwest Division play with losses to Pace (63-70), SCSU (58-61), and Le Moyne (61-71), and wins against Adelphi (68-66) (71-56) and New Haven (66-54).
- Destine Perry has been the Yellow Jackets go-to this season. Perry has started all 17 games for AIC this season and leads the team in multiple statistical categories. The grad student leads in points per game (14.5), rebounds per game (4.8), assists (39), and steals (29), while shooting 42-percent from the field and 40-percent from three-point range.
- In Perry's last outing, she grabbed a game-high 24 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field and 5-of-6 from three-point range, while grabbing seven boards and two steals. Perry has double-digit points in 12 of AIC's 17 games this season
Saint Anselm
- When the Owls and Hawks meet on Sunday, both teams will be playing the second game of a back-to-back. Saint Anselm will be on the road against Stonehill on Saturday, while the Southern will be hosting American International.
- Heading into the weekend, the Hawks are 2-3 in their last five games with wins over New Haven (81-43) at home and Saint Rose (77-63) on the road, and losses to Adelphi (60-63) on the road and Le Moyne (63-67) and Assumption (47-67) at home.
- Two players to keep your eye on for Saint Anselm are Peyton Steinman and Gabby Turco. Both have started all 18 games for the Hawks and have been instrumental in their success.
- Steinman has been a solid two-way play for the Hawks that has scoring and play-making abilities. She is averaging 19.8 points per game, 6.9 rebounds per game and 2.8 assists per game. Despite shining in the Hawks last win over Saint Rose on Jan. 25 where she grabbed 29 points on 10-of-21 shooting from the field (47.6-percent) and 5-of-7 shooting from three-point range (71-percent), Steinman was limited to just 10 minutes and five points in her last outing.
- Turco is second on the team in scoring averaging 16.8 on the season, and shooting 34.3-percent from the field and 42-percent from three-point range. She has double-digit points in all but one game for Saint Anselm this season.
The Owls in the NE10
- Zoë Amalbert is first in the conference in total assists with 104 and first in assists per game with 6.5.
- Jessica Fressle is tied for second in rebounds per game (10.6) and seventh in the conference in points per game (16.3). Fressle is also third in free throws made (83-103), tied for third in total rebounds with 169 and seventh in points (262).
- As a team, the Owls are first in the conference in three-pointers made (123), first in assists with 15.4 per game and fifth in free throw percentage (74.4).
The Owls in the NCAA
- Zoë Amalbert is third overall in assists per game (6.5) and 12th in total assists (104).
- Jessica Fressle is tied for 21st in rebounds per game (10.6) and tied for 28th in free throws made (83).
