How It Happened
  • Southern exited the gates on an 18-4 tear in the opening minutes of the first. Midway through, Saint Anselm's offense countered with an 8-0 run off the hands of Peyton Steinman who sank two three-points and cut the Owls lead to six. The Owls finished the frame with an 8-3 run and an 11-point lead, 26-15.
  • After going down by as many as 11 in the first quarter, the Hawks cut the Owls lead once again to single-digits with a layup from Jenoyce Laniyan nine seconds into the second quarter. Both sides then went back-and-forth with baskets to kick off the second quarter. Back-to-back threes from Fressle and Alexa Kellner (Stamford, Conn.) gave the Owls their largest lead of the game (19) to that point, 40-21. Southern closed out the quarter on an 11-3 run, which sent them into halftime with a 23-point lead. Jessica Fressle had 18 of her eventual 33 points in the first half.
  • Out of the locker room, a scored frenzy ensued for both sides as Southern narrowly outscored Saint Anselm, 11-9. The Owls scored on four-straight possessions during that three-minute span and led, 64-37. Midway through the quarter, the scoring grew quiet as both teams failed to land a basket in multiple possessions. With under a minute to play in the frame, Southern found their footing and capped the quarter with a 10-2 run that gave them a 32-point lead. Five of the 10 points in the run came off the hands of Fressle.
  • Southern remained hot in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter scoring on its first four possessions, 89-54. Zoë Amalbert led the way in the final quarter with six of her 18 eventual points on two three-pointers. The Owls' largest lead of the game came with just over a minute to play when Kellner sunk a layup to put Southern up by 38. Southern's balanced attack and major offensive firepower from multiple players helped them capture a dominant 36-point victory over one of the top teams in the conference.
