Women's Basketball Hosts Pace on Tuesday, Feb. 8

The Southern Connecticut women's basketball team will host Pace University, on Tuesday, Feb. 8 at Moore Field House. The Setters are the leaders in the Southwest Division, while the Owls sit in fifth in the division.

Spectator Policy
The Southern Connecticut Athletic Department have announced an update to its Spectator Policy. Effective Feb. 5, attendance will be limited to two guests per SCSU student-athlete and members of the coaching staff. At this time, no visiting team spectators will be permitted in Moore Field House for contests/scrimmages. All attendees must wear a mask regardless of vaccination status at all times indoors and will be asked to adhere to all SCSU Campus COVID guidelines. 

Last Time Out
The Owls took down Saint Anselm, 105-69 on Feb. 6. Graduate student Jessica Fressle had a game-high 33 points on 75-percent shooting from the field and chipped in 10 boards. Senior Zoë Amalbert recorded 18 points and seven assists, while graduate student Patricia Conroy had 12 points and eight assists. The two Delaney's were major contributors for the Owls today as Delaney Haines picked up 17 points and Delaney Connors recorded 11 assists and nine points.  

All-Time Against Pace: 25-22
Last Time They Met: These two squads met in early January where Pace captured a 67-49 victory over Southern in Pleasantville, N.Y. Delaney Connors led all Owls in points with 15, while collecting six rebounds and two assists. Alexa Kellner shot 56-percent from the field and registered 10 points and six rebounds, while Jessica Fressle picked up 11 points and six rebounds.

Matchup Preview
Southern Connecticut
  • Jessica Fressle is one to keep your eye on. The graduate student is averaging 17.2 points per game and 10.9 rebounds per game and is one of three players in the conference averaging a double-double.
  • Fressle has double-digit points in 16 of the Owls 18 games this season. In her last three games, she is averaging 21.6 points per game, 12.6 rebounds per game, in addition to swiping four steals in those games. She has 10 double-doubles to date as well including her last three games (33 points, 10 rebounds against Saint Anselm, 15 points, 18 rebounds against AIC, and 17 points and 10 rebounds against Le Moyne).
  • Zoë Amalbert is another player to watch on Southern's side. In her last three games, she has averaged 11.3 points per game, 6.0 assists per game and 3.3 rebounds per game. She leads the conference in assists and assists per game. In her last outing, she grabbed 18 points on 64-percent shooting from the field and 57-percent from three-point range.
  • The Owls are 2-3 in their last five games, four of which were played in seven days. Their two wins were major over Le Moyne (62-51) and Saint Anselm (105-69), while their losses were at the hands of No. 16 SNHU (64-70), American International (59-70), and Assumption (48-76).

Pace
  • The Setters are 3-2 in their last five outings that includes a three-game winning streak. They defeated SNHU (75-66), New Haven (58-43), and Saint Rose (70-62), and fell to Franklin Pierce (52-53) and Bentley (55-75), all in conference play.
  • The duo of Lauren Schetter and Lauren Hackett have been the nuclei of the Setters this season. Both have started and played all 21 games and contributed greatly on offense and defense.
  • Lauren Schetter has spearheaded Pace's offense, averaging 20.8 points per game on 47.9-percent shooting from the field, while chipping in 35 assists. On the defensive end, Schetter averages 8.5 rebounds per game and has picked up a team-leading 34 steals and 27 blocks.
  • It seems all plays go through Lauren Hackett. She averages 4.71 assists per game and has dished 99 this season. Her offensive contributions do not stop there as she averages 10.2 points per game on 35.4-percent shooting from the field. Hackett has also added 19 steals and 11 blocks.
  • In their last outing, a win over Saint Rose, Schetter recorded 33 points on 50-percent shooting, while Hackett had 10 points on 50-percent shooting and six assists.
     
The Owls in the NE10
  • Zoë Amalbert is first in the conference in total assists with 117 and first in assists per game with 6.5. 
  • Jessica Fressle is second in rebounds per game (10.9) and fifth in the conference in points per game (17.2). Fressle is also third in free throws made (91-114), tied for second in total rebounds with 197 and fifth in points (310).
  • Patricia Conroy is fifth in the conference in three-point shooting percentage (39.4).
  • As a team, the Owls are first in the conference in three-pointers made (150), first in assists with 16.6 per game, fourth in points per game (68.3), and fifth in free throw percentage (75.0).

The Owls in the NCAA
  • Zoë Amalbert is fourth overall in assists per game (6.5) and sixth in total assists (117).
  • Jessica Fressle is 17th in rebounds per game (10.9) and tied for 25th in free throws made (91).
  • As a team, the Owls are 17th in assists per game (16.6) and tied for 46th in NCAA DII in three-pointers made (150).
 
Player Notes
  • Jessica Fressle topped a career-high in points with 33 against Saint Anselm. Her previous career-high of 28 points was also against Saint Anselm on Feb. 1, 2020.
  • The last time a Southern player had more than 30 points in a game was Kiana Steinauer on Feb. 23, 2019 when she had 34 points.
  • Fressle's 33 points were also the sixth most points in a single-game all-time.
  • Fressle also recorded her 10th double-double of the season with 33 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Delaney Connors had a career-high 11 assists against Saint Anselm. Her previous career-high (7) was set on Feb. 3 against Le Moyne.
  • Delaney Haines had a career-high 17 points against Saint Anselm. Her previous career-high (13) was against SNHU on Jan. 31.
  • Patricia Conroy notched a career-high eight assists against Saint Anselm. Her previous career-high (6) was set on Nov. 14, 2021, against Bloomfield.
  • Zoë Amalbert has 13 games with at least five assists and four games with at least 10 assists. 
 
Team Notes
  • Southern's game against Saint Anselm hit many milestones for the program.
    • Topped a program record in team assists with 34. The program record was 31, which was done during the 1999-2000 season.
    • Broke a 40-year-old program record to the exact day in single-game field goal percentage with a 65.6-percent shooting percentage. The record was originally set on Feb. 6, 1982, against Colgate.
    • Their 58.1-percentage shooting from three-point range ranked third in program history.
    • 105 points ranks second all-time in program history. They last achieved that feat on Nov. 15, 2008, against Post University.
  • Southern registered 105 points in their last outing against Saint Anselm, which was the first time this season they have broken 100.
  • The last time the Owls have scored over 100 points in a game was on Nov. 10, 2020, against Bloomfield College. 
  • The Owls had the most three-pointers in a game since they recorded 15 against Saint Thomas Aquinas on Dec. 18, 2019.
