Southern Connecticut baseball will open their 2022 Spring Trip against Bloomfield on Saturday, Mar. 12 and Sunday, Mar. 13 against Molloy, for a doubleheader, at Santaluces Sports Complex in Lake Worth, Fla. The Owls start the trip with a record of 8-0 overall and are ranked third in the latest NCBWA East Region Poll while also receiving votes in the national poll. Bloomfield is currently 4-6 while Molloy is 7-3 and ranked 25
th nationally.
Spring Trip
Following the Owls' three-game weekend against Bloomfield and Molloy, the Owls will face Saint Thomas Aquinas on Monday, Mar. 14 and Lynn University on Thursday, Mar. 17. The Owls will also face Scoutz USA on Tuesday, Mar. 15 and will wrap up the trip with a tilt against Post and Bentley on Friday, Mar. 18, followed by a doubleheader against Post on Saturday, Mar. 19.
Owls Ranked 3rd in NCBWA East Regional Poll on Mar. 7, 2022
Southern Connecticut baseball jumped up one spot in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) to third in the weekly poll. The Owls swept a doubleheader at Mercy, 7-2 and 5-3, to improve to 8-0 on the season. Southern is currently one of 10 undefeated teams in NCAA Division II baseball, to date. Southern is also receiving votes in the NCBWA National Top 25.
Notes
- As a team, Southern ranks second in runs scored (78), second in RBI (71), second in batting average (.327) while leading the conference in on-base percentage (.441).
- The Owls also rank second in doubles (24) and extra-base hits (31).
- The team currently ranks third nationally in doubles per game (3.83) and also ranks ninth in on-base percentage (.467) and scoring (11.0 runs per game) among all NCAA Divsion II schools.
- The Owls' pitching staff has also allowed the fewest hits (51) and earned runs (22) of any team in the NE10 with as many games played and also also boast a conference-best ERA of 3.00.
- Individually, Mike DeMartino ranks fourth in the NE10 and 27th nationally in doubles per game (0.67), 14th in the NE10 in hits per game (1.67) and fourth in the NE10 and 25th in the NCAA in RBI per game (1.83).
- Bill Sullivan currently ranks third in the NE10 and ninth nationally in runs scored per game (2.17) while leading the concerence in sacrificice bunts (3).
- Andrew Eng is seventh in the NE10 with 1.50 RBI per game while he and Sullivan rank ninth in the NE10 in doubles per game (0.50).
- Tommy Hughes, through two appearances, has yet to allow a runner past first base and hasn't allowed a hit across 9 1/3 innings.
- He leads the country in ERA, hits allowed per nine innings, WHIP (0.16) and ranks fourth in strikeouts per nine innings (18.47).
