SCSU Softball Falls To Caldwell, 12-10, In Extra Innings

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Southern Connecticut softball lost a back-and-forth battle to Caldwell, 12-10, in nine innings. With the loss, the Owls fall to 4-3 while Caldwell improves to 4-3.

Jacqueline Dumont was 3-for-5 with a RBI and two runs scored while Angela Barresi also had three hits and drove in two runs. Katrina Roy was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Jessica Perucki took the no-decision after allowing six runs on seven this over four innings. Jazmyn Martinez came-on in relief and battled through 4 2/3, striking out six and scattering five hits while getting hit for four unearned runs to take the loss.

Southern opened the game with two runs in its first at-bat. After Katrina Roy worked a one-out walk, Jacqueline Dumont doubled down the left field line to move Roy to third and give the Owls two runners in scoring position. Owls starter Jessica Perucki saw an eight-pitch at-bat and helped her own cause with a single to center field to score both runs.

Caldwell manufactured a run in the second inning before the Owls' ran-across four runs in the top of the third. The Owls worked the bases loaded behind a walk by Delaporte before back-to-back singles by Liz DeRosa and Julianna Corbett before Delaporte was put out at home on a ground ball to second. Angela Barressi then lined a two-out single up the middle to plate two more runs for the Owls. After Emily Lange walked, Roy hit a laser to the gap for a two-run double to give the Owls a 6-1 lead.

Caldwell wouldn't go away, scoring twice in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the Owls' lead to 6-3. In the fifth, Perucki walked the lead-off batter, gave up a hit to the next batter and then walked another to load the bases, giving way to Jazmyn Martinez who came on in relief. Caldwell kept the rally going with a two-run single to pull within a run, 6-5. A bunt single tied the game followed by a sacrifice fly to give Caldwell a 7-6 lead.

In the top of the sixth, Emily Lange walked to lead off the inning before moving to second on Roy's groundball to third. Dumont then singled to score Lange and tie the game. On the throw to the plate to attempt to throw-out Lange, Dumont moved to second. The throw from the catcher was off-line and then misplayed by the center fielder, allowing Dumont to come all the way around to give Southern an 8-7 lead.

In the seventh, Southern took a two-run lead when Lange drove in Corbett to give the Owls a 9-7 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, a pair of errors proved costly as Caldwell tied the game, 9-9, to force extra innings. Using the California Tie-Breaker Rule, Roy started the inning at second base and moved to third on a single by Dumont. Paige Delier came in to run for Roy and scored on a ground-out by Martinez to give the Owls the lead. Caldwell got run back in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly.

In the 10th, Martinez retired the first two batters she faced before Caldwell's Ashleigh Tavaska connected for a two-homer to end the game.
