Softball Sweeps American International, 7-6 and 9-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University softball team swept a doubleheader against American International, 7-6 and 9-1, at Pelz Field. With the wins, the Owls improved to 7-7 overall and 3-1 in the Northeast 10, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 2-12 overall and 0-4 in the NE10. 

Jessica Perucki (West Milford, N.J.) and Jazmyn Martinez (Middletown, N.Y.) both earned wins for the Owls, while Jayden Delaporta (Mystic, Conn.) and Gabriella Festa (Patchogue, N.Y.) both hit home runs. Delaporta went 3-for-5 with four runs scored also, Emily Lange (Monroe, Conn.) scored three runs and went 3-for-5 with two walks, while Jacqueline Dumont (Nashua, N.H.) went 3-for-6 with three RBIs. Southern's pitching staff between the two games totaled 15 strikeouts and allowed just one walk. 

Game 1: Southern Connecticut 7, American International 6
The Yellow Jackets scored four runs in the top of the first inning to take the early lead. In the bottom half of the inning, Southern responded with five runs to take the lead. Lange walked to lead off the inning, and Dumont hit an RBI double to bring in the first. Dumont reached third base on a wild pitch and scored on an error to bring home the second run. Katrina Roy (Bristol, Conn.) scored on a wild pitch, and Dominique DeLutri (North Bellmore, N.Y.) hit a go-ahead two-run triple with two outs to give Southern a 5-4 lead. 

AIC tied the game at five in the top of the second. Lange led off the bottom half with a single to right field. Delaporta then blasted a tie-breaking two-run home run to give Southern the lead back, 7-5. 

Perucki came in to pitch in the top of the third inning, and allowed just one hit through her first two innings of work with four strikeouts. AIC got a run back in the fifth inning, but Perucki recorded another strikeout and a pop up to end the inning. With one out and one on in the top of the sixth, DeLutri helped Perucki get out of the inning by turning a dazzling double play. Perucki then set the side down in order in the top of the seventh inning to secure a one-run win. 

Delaporta went 1-for-3 with the go-ahead two-run homerun in the first game, while Lange went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Dumont went 1-for-3 with an RBI and DeLutri went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Perucki picked up the win, as she went five innings in relief with seven strikeouts and allowed just three hits, one run, and zero walks. 

Game 2: Southern Connecticut 9, American International 1 
AIC again jumped out to an early lead in the first, as they scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly. Southern loaded the bases in the bottom of the first, and Roy scored Delaporta to tie the game. 

Southern then erupted for five runs in the bottom of the second. Ashley Saab (Oakland, N.J.) and DeLutri led off the inning by reaching on a hit by pitch and a walk. With two outs and the bases loaded, Dumont singled to center to bring home two runs and gave Southern a 3-1 lead. Morgan Tuscano (Wallingford, Conn.) walked to reload the bases, and Roy singled home Delaporta to bring home another run. A passed ball and a wild pitch brought home Dumont and Tuscano to give Southern a 6-1 lead. 

After Martinez was given the lead, she pitched a perfect 1-2-3 inning in the third with two strikeouts. In the bottom half of the inning, Festa crushed a pinch-hit home run with two outs to extend Southern's lead to 7-1. Martinez allowed just two hits combined in the fourth and fifth innings and held AIC scoreless. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Lange, Delaporta, and Dumont all singled to load the bases with one out. Tuscano then singled home Lange to give Southern 9-1, mercy rule win. 

Notes
  • Delaporta's homerun was the sixth of her career and second against AIC. She also hit a homerun against the Yellow Jackets on May 4, 2021, during the NE10 Tournament. 
  • Over the last two season, Delaporta is 10-for-21 with two home runs and 12 RBIs in seven games against AIC. 
  • Dumont now has six games this season with multiple hits, and three games with multiple RBIs. Over her last 11 games, she is hitting an even .500 (17-for-34). 
  • Dumont has recorded at least one hit and one RBI in her last seven games against AIC and in eight of her 10 career games against the Yellow Jackets. All-time against AIC, she is hitting .343 (11-for-32) with 11 RBIs. 
  • Lange recorded her third multiple-hit game of the season during game one and ninth of her career. It was also her third multiple-hit game of her career against AIC. 
  • Roy now has three-games this season with at least two RBIs. 
  • DeLutri's triple was the first of her career and second this season by Southern. 
  • Perucki earned her fourth win of the season and third win in four career games against AIC. 
  • Martinez earned her third win of the season and fifth of her career against the Yellow Jackets. 
  • Southern has won five of their last six games against AIC dating back to April 2021.
