Women's Basketball Falls to Stonehill in Northeast 10 Semifinals

EASTON, Mass. - The Southern Connecticut women's basketball team fell to Stonehill College, 59-56, in the Northeast 10 Conference Semifinals. With the loss, the Owls finish the season 13-14 overall, while the Skyhawks improved to 16-8.

Southern was led by senior Zoë Amalbert (Nanuet, N.Y.) who had 17 points, six steals, five rebounds, and four assists. Senior Delaney Connors (West Hartford, Conn.) recorded 13 points, six rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. Graduate student Jessica Fressle (Levittown, N.Y.) had 10 points, five rebounds, and two assists.

How It Happened

  • The first quarter saw both teams trade baskets. With 2:11 remaining in the quarter, Delaney Haines and Delaney Connors hit back-to-back three-pointers to finish out the quarter and put the Owls up by six.
  • Second quarter action started similar to the first 10 of action. Stonehill started a 9-3 run that saw them come within one of the Owls to close the first half.
  • Amalbert kicked off the third quarter for the Owls with a 4-0 run on her own. Midway through the quarter, Southern went on an 8-3 run that expanded their lead to eight. Stonehill closed the third frame on a 7-0 run with Southern still leading by one.
  • Stonehill turned up the offense in the fourth quarter. Both sides traded two-pointers through the first minute of play that resulted in four lead changes. Amalbert and Patricia Conroy (Staten Island, N.Y.) gave the Owls a four-point lead at the 7:51 mark, 46-42.  Stonehill countered with a 7-0 run that gave them the lead, 49-46, midway through. The Owls tied it with an Amalbert three-pointer at 5:42. The Skyhawks went on a small 6-2 run that gave them a four point lead, 57. Southern tried to claw their way back with back-to-back baskets from Connors and Amalbert with the latter bringing the Owls within one after a free throw. Stonehill held tight defense in the final two minutes and added two free throws to seal their victory by three.

  • Zoë Amalbert had a career-high six steals. Her previous career-high of five came on Nov. 14, 2021 against Bloomfield. 
  • Amalbert had at least three assists in 25 of her 27 games played this season. 
  • Jessica Fressle had double-digit points in 25 of her 27 games this season.
  • Delaney Connors had double-digit points in 16 of her 27 games played.
