WALTHAM, Mass. - The Southern Connecticut softball team fell to Bentley University, 5-2 and 6-3, on the road. With the losses, the Owls fell to 13-19 overall and 8-12 in the Northeast 10, while the Falcons improved to 18-16 overall and 8-10 in the NE10.
Liz DeRosa (Hudson, N.H.) and Jessica Perucki (West Milford, N.J.) both went 2-for-4 in game one. Jacqueline Dumont (Nashua, N.H.) and Madelyn Sauve (Mansfield, Conn.) also picked up hits for the Owls in game one. Dumont went 4-for-4 in game two with two runs batted in.Â
Game 1: Bentley 5, Southern Connecticut 2
Bentley came out of the gates firing in to kick off the day. The Falcons Jordan Krause, Kylee Amato, and Kaylee Mankins picked up singles in the first three at bats to load the bases. Kaileen Cain was hit by a pitch in her at bat that scored Bentley's first run. An error with one out scored the Falcons' second run of the inning.
It was Bentley again in the bottom of the second that found the scoresheet. Krause picked up her second hit of the game with a single to left field. That hit was followed up by a triple from Amato to bring around Krause, 3-0.
The Owls looked to find their groove in the four. Jessica Perucki recorded a one out single to left field, which was followed up by a Liz DeRosa single to left field. After Katrina Roy (Bristol, Conn.) reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases, Angela Barresi (Windsor, Conn.) earned a walk at the plate that scored Southern's only run of the inning.
Southern found the scoresheet again in the fifth inning. Jayden Delaporta (Mystic, Conn.) reached base after working the count for a walk. Madelyn Sauve (Mansfield, Conn.) singled to right field to put baserunners on the corners for the Owls. Delaporta subsequently scored on a passed ball to put Southern within one of Bentley's lead, 3-2.
The Falcons responded in the bottom half of the inning. A lead-off single from Cain put a baserunner on. Sabrina Grizzaffi launched a triple to left field to score the runner from first and increase their lead to two. Morgan Fraitzi singled in the following at bat to score Grizzaffi and sealed the victory, 5-2.
Game 2: Bentley 6, Southern Connecticut 3
Southern recorded the first set of runs in game two. Emily Lange (Monroe, Conn.) singled to lead-off the game for the Owls. In the next at bat, Jayden Delaporta singled through the left side to put runners on first and second for Jacqueline Dumont at the plate. Dumont knocked a RBI single to left field to score Lange from second. After Liz DeRosa was hit by a pitch to load the bases, a sacrifice fly from Katrina Roy (Bristol, Conn.) scored Delaporta on the tag for the Owls second run of the inning.
Bentley responded in the bottom half of the inning. Jordan Krause hit a lead-off single to get the Falcons rolling. After Krause managed to swipe two bags in the following plays, Ella Hillier singled in the infield to score Krause from third. Kaileen Cain walked in her at bat before a string of errors allowed another Falcon to score and tie the game, 2-2. Morgan Fraitzi capped off the scoring for Bentley with a single through the left side that scored two, 4-2.
After three and a half scoreless innings, Bentley added to their lead in the fifth with a Cain two-run home run to center field, 6-2.
The Owls managed to squeak in another run in the seventh on a Dumont RBI single through the left side, but the Falcons first inning frenzy proved to be the difference maker as they went on to cap the day with a win, 6-3.
