Softball Clinches Berth in NE10 Postseason With Two-Game Split Against Saint Anselm on Senior Day

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut softball team clinched a berth in the 2022 Northeast 10 Conference tournament after splitting a pair of games against Saint Anselm College, a 7-0 victory and a 1-0 loss. With the results, the Owls moved to 17-20-1 overall and 12-13-1 in the Northeast 10, while the Hawks moved to 27-14 overall and 20-6 in the NE10.

Prior to the start of the doubleheader, the Owls honors their three-member graduating class in Liz DeRosa (Hudson, N.H.), Jazmyn Martinez (Middletown, N.Y.) and Jayden Delaporta (Mystic, Conn.).

Jazmyn Martinez earned the game two shutout victory with four strikeouts. Jacqueline Dumont (Nashua, N.H.) had game two home run with three runs batted in and one run scored. Emily Lange (Monroe, Conn.) went 3-for-6 on the day with one walk, one RBI and one run scored. Jayden Delaporta went 3-for-5 including a walk, with one RBI and one run scored. Madelyn Sauve (Mansfield, Conn.) went 2-for-3 in game two with one run, while Liz DeRosa went 2-for-3 in game two with one run scored.

Game 1: Saint Anselm 1, Southern Connecticut 0
  • It was a pitching duel in the circle between the Owls' Jessica Perucki (West Milford, N.J.) and the Hawks' Haile Hicks for the first six innings.
  • Both teams flashed a little offensive throughout, but it was not until the top of the seventh inning that either team found the scoresheet.
  • Saint Anselm's Bailey Cain hit a double down the left field line to get the Hawks a baserunner. Bri Kliaber hit a single to shallow right field that scored the eventual game-winning run.

Game 2: Southern Connecticut 7, Saint Anselm 0
  • Southern found it first in game two as Emily Lange and Jayden Delaporta grabbed back-to-back walks to kick off the inning. Jacqueline Dumont ripped a rocket to left field for a three-run home run that put the Owls up early.
  • Liz Derosa (Hudson, N.H.) hit an infield single to get the Owls started in the fourth inning. Morgan Tuscano (Wallingford, Conn.) reached on a fielder's choice, while DeRosa made it safely into second on an error by the shortstop. Jazmyn Martinez successfully moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt picked up by the second baseman. DeRosa scored during Angela Barresi's (Windsor, Conn.) at bat. Barresi worked the count and reached on a walk to put runners on the corners. Lange's at bat saw her hit an infield single to the shortstop and beat the throw, while Tuscano snuck by to score. Delaporta capped the scoring for the Owls with a single up the middle to score Barresi from third, 6-0 Owls.
  • The Owls found the scoresheet again in the fifth inning. Madelyn Sauve hit out a lead-off single to the shortstop and subsequently advanced to second on a passed ball. DeRosa's single got between the shortstop and third baseman and put runners on the corners. Sauve scored on a sacrifice fly to give Southern a seven-run lead.
  • Saint Anselm had their chances to get on the board, but could not solve Martinez in the circle as she went on to earn the shutout.

Notes
