SCSU Women's Soccer Blanks Staten Island, 2-0, As Dustin, Burr Score

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut women's soccer picked up its first win of the 2022 season with a 2-0 victory against Staten Island at Jess Dow Field. The Owls improve to 1-1-0 on the year while Staten Island drops to 0-2-0 on the season.

Amanda Dustin (Marshfield, Mass.) and Kelsey Burr (Wallingford, Conn.) both scored for the Owls, while Taylor Hennig (Farmington, Conn.), Lindsay Burnham (Bow, N.H.) and Caileigh Driscoll (Plymouth, Mass.) added assists.

After coming out of the half tied 0-0, the Owls broke through in the 62nd minute. Alexie Rosado (Branford, Conn.) carried the ball along the sideline in front of the Owls bench before drawing a foul to set up the free kick. Just outside of the box, Hennig spied Dustin breaking to the front of the net and delivered the pass into the scrum where Dustin rose above the crowd and headed the pass past the Dolphins' keeper for the Owls' first goal of the season as SCSU took a 1-0 lead.

The Owls controlled the pace for most of the game, including a dominant second half. With just under five minutes to play, Owls' keeper Abigail Allen (Orange, Conn.) booted the ball up the right wing. After the pass caromed around midfield, Driscoll collected the loose ball and handed it off to Burnham. Burnham took a few dribbles and then delivered a gorgeous pass through the CSI backfield to Burr who found herself all-alone with the keeper before popping in her first of the year to give the Owls the two-goal lead in the closing minutes.

The Owls outshot Staten Island, 18-3, including a 9-to-2 on-goal mark. Virtually uncontested for most of regulation, Allen picked up her first shutout of the season and fifth of her career. For Dustin, it was her third career goal while Burr scored the eighth of her career. Burnham's assist was her first career point while Hennig, who transferred to Southern from Marist, picked up her first point as an Owl.

Southern returns to action on Wednesday, Aug. 31 when it travels to Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. to take on Mercy at 3 p.m. The Owls return home on Sunday, Sept. 4 to host Post at 1 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
