SCSU Women's Soccer Falls To Mercy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Southern Connecticut women's soccer took a 7-2 loss at Mercy in a non-conference matchup in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. With the loss, Southern drops to 1-2 on the season while Mercy improves to 1-1 on the season.

Taylor Hennig (Farmington, Conn.) totaled a goal and assist while Kelsey Burr (Orange, Conn.) also scored for the Owls.

Trailing 6-0 coming out of the half, Alexie Rosado took the second half kick and handed it back to Hennig. Hennig sent the ball deep into the attack zone along the left wing where a Mercy defender attempted to take control. Burr was able to coral the ball and send a shot from the left post to the opposite corner to put the Owls on the board.

With under 10 minutes to play in regulation, the Owls put some pressure on the Knights defense. Julia Alicea carried the ball into the attack zone and passed it to her left to Kat Mancinone. Mancinone made a move around the defender, leaving her all alone with Mercy's keeper. After she was taken down by a defender in the box, Hennig took the penalty kick and buried it into the bottom left corner.

Burr's goal is the second in as many games, and the ninth of her career. For Hennig, she's now tallied a point in back-to-back games while also scoring her first goal as an Owl.

Southern is back in action on Sunday, Sept. 4 when it hosts Post for a 1 p.m. start at Jess Dow Field.
