Heliceliz Rivera Posts Triple-Double In Comeback Win Against Queens

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut volleyball overcame a two-set deficit to storm back and defeat Queens in five games. The Knights took the first two games, 27-25 and 25-23, before the Owls won 25-16 and 25-19 in sets three and four and then cruising to a 15-9 win in the deciding game five. Southern improves to 8-5 on the season with the non-conference win while Queens drops to 3-7.

Heliceliz Rivera posted the sixth triple-double in program history and the first since 2016. Rivera finished with 12 kills, 13 assists and 10 digs as well as two service aces. The second year Owl had a break-out weekend to lead Southern to a pair of wins this weekend after they defeated Le Moyne on Friday night.

Rivera was one of four Owls with double-digit kills, while Sara Enright and Kacey Deecher each posted double-doubles in the Owls' victory. Enright had a double-double with a team-leading 13 kills and 18 digs while Deecher totaled 12 kills and 19 digs. Lily Miller had 29 assists and 13 digs for a double-double while Sydney Bennett tallied 10 kills and five blocks. Bennett had 18 blocks over the Owls' last three games this weekend.

In the first set, Southern was slow out of the gate as they trailed, 17-10, but staged an 8-to-1 run to tie the set at 18-18. Queens won five of the next six points to take a 23-19 lead before Southern responded with a 6-1 run to take a 25-24 lead, including four-straight points while facing set-point by the Knights. Queens held on to win the final three points of the set to take a 1-0 lead.

The second set saw more of the same back-and-forth action before the Owls took a 21-19 lead. Queens powered through the remainder of the set, outscoring the Owls' 6-2 to take a 2-0 lead. The third set saw Southern stare down elimination and take an early 10-4 lead before a Queens timeout. Coming out of the pause, the Owls took off on a 10-6 run to take a 20-10 lead and then capitalized on a few Queens' errors to close-out the set.

Southern tied in the fourth, after breaking out of a tie set, 14-14, to outscore Queens down the stretch, 11-5, as Deecher and Rivera totaled four kills to force the deciding game. In the fifth game, Southern used three kills from Enright to take a 8-4 lead. Southern controlled play through the remainder of the set to pick up the come-from-behind win.

The Owls return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 13 when they host Bloomfield at 7 p.m. at Pelz Gymnasium. Southern then opens Northeast 10 Conference play against Bentley on Friday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. before hosting Felician on Sunday, Sept. 18.
