Volleyball Falls to Molloy, Defeats Post

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut volleyball team fell to Molloy College, 3-0, and defeated Post University, 3-1, at Pelz Gymnasium. With the split, the Owls move to 5-2 overall.
 
Game 1: Molloy 3, Southern Connecticut 0

Senior Gabriela Gaibur (Monroe, N.Y.) and junior Sara Enright (Yola Linda, Calif.) were the offensive leaders for the Owls in game one against Molloy. Gaibur grabbed eight kills, six digs and one service ace, while Enright grabbed eight kills and five digs. Junior setter Taylor Jones (Middletown, N.Y.) had 20 assists and eight digs for the Owls in the loss.

  • Molloy opened the game with a 5-0 run in a set that the Lions would never trail in. Southern attempted to claw its way back in, coming within one of Molloy at 13-12, but the Lions grabbed 12 of the last 14 set points to capture the first victory.
  • The Lions hopped out to quick 4-0 lead once again to start the set. The Owls nudged their way back with four of the next five points to come within one. 5-4. Molloy took the next four-straight and continued with their offensive push. Southern attempted to chip at Molloy's lead, but the Lions persisted and took the set by eight.
  • Southern started stronger in the third and final set of the game with five of the first nine. Down 7-6, Southern rattled off five of seven and took a two-point lead. At 16-16, Molloy erupted with a 9-1 run to cap the set and complete the sweep over the Owls.
 
Game 2: Southern Connecticut 3, Post 1

Junior Sara Enright cleared the way for the Owls in game two as she picked up 20 digs and 13 kills to go along with two blocks. Senior Gabriela Gaibur recorded 14 digs and contributed 12 kills on offense. First year player Sydney Bennett (Marietta, Ga.) was solid on defense with seven blocks, while chipping in seven kills, while junior Avery Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo.) dug out 19 and tallied seven kills. Sophomore Lily Miller (Ottawa, Ill.) registered 40 assists on offense and collected 10 digs on defense in the win, while first year player Aubrey Villena (San Diego, Calif.) picked up a career-high 22 digs and two service aces.

  • After a 3-1 start for Post, Southern notched 10 of the next 12 points and took a five-point lead. Post came as close as three points to the Owls the rest of the way as Southern used an 8-1 run to close set one.
  • Set two started with the Owls taking five of the first seven points. With the Eagles down by one, used a 5-0 run expand their lead to six. After Post grabbed two quick points on an ace and an error, the Owls powered seven of nine points to secure a nine-point lead. The Eagles would not go away as they responded with an 8-1 run to come back within reach of the Owls' lead. Up three and with set point on the line for Southern, Post found some offense and tied it with three straight points to tie it. The Eagles would then take the lead, but the Owls took the next two and were in line for set point once again. Post capped it with the next three points, two off the hand of Zara McCauley and the Eagles took set two.
  • Post jumped out to a 5-0 start in the third set. Southern responded with five-straight points to tie it. With Post leading 9-7, Southern picked up six-straight points and the lead. At 14-11 Southern, the Owls recorded a 7-1 run that started to put the set out of reach for Post. The Eagles managed to come back into the set, but the Owls hung on for the four-point set three victory.
  • The final set saw both sides trade points, but Post pulled out with a 13-8 lead. Southern found their way back into the mix down by one, 14-13. After the Eagles grabbed three-straight points, the Owls surged back with a 7-0 run and took the lead. The Eagles equalized it once again to keep the final set going, but Southern sealed the victory with four straight points that secured the victory.

The Owls have a short turnaround time as they hit the road for their first set of away contests in Philadelphia, Pa. against host, Holy Family University, and Kutztown University on Saturday, Sept. 3.
