Weekly Preview: Indoor Track & Field Hosts Art Kadish Elm City Challenge, Swimming & Diving, Women's Basketball At Home

The first semester is inching towards the end as Finals week begins on Dec. 11 on the Southern Connecticut campus. The Owls will be in full swing with home events for men's and women's indoor track & field, men's and women's swimming & diving and women's basketball while the currently surging men's basketball team will enjoy a break until after exams.
 
After this week, there are only two home games before we close-out 2023 with men's basketball hosting Holy Family on Tuesday, Dec. 19 at 2 p.m. and Molloy on Dec. 30 at 1 p.m.

SCSU Men's and Women's Basketball Ticket Information
Southern Connecticut men's and women's basketball tickets will be $7 for adults and $5 for children under 12 and seniors. Owls' fans can purchase tickets here. All SCSU students, staff and faculty are admitted free.

Southern Connecticut women's basketball enters the week with an overall record of 2-5 including a 1-3 mark in NE10 and will head to undefeated Pace (6-0, 4-0 NE10) on Tuesday, Dec. 5. The Owls will then host Bridgeport on Saturday, Dec. 9.
 
Notes: Katie Williams leads the Owls with 10.4 points per game as well as 7.1 rebounds per contest … Delaney Haines checks in with 8.4 points with a team-high nine three-pointers for the year … Julianna Bonilla missed three games before suiting up this week and is averaging 7.8 points per contest … Makenzie Helms and Jillian Martin have both dished out 25 assists for a 3.6 per game average while Helms is averaging 6.1 points … Martin also averages 1.4 steals per game and 5.3 points … Hope Fox averaged 5.6 points and 6.1 rebounds per game as well as 2.1 steals per contest.

SCSU Men's Basketball enters the week after back-to-back wins against AIC and Saint Rose and stand at 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the NE10. The Owls will face a tough Pace squad who enters their midweek draw with a record of 7-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
 
Notes: Owls' freshman Christian Joe was named the Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday, Dec. 4. Joe had a break-out performance in an 83-69 come-from-behind win against Saint Rose. Joe had his first 20-point game of his career and also dished out seven assists and had two steals. He also hit on 8-of-13 from the floor including 4-of-7 from three-point range. For the week, he averaged 13.5 points and 3.5 assists in 18 minutes per game.Josh McGettigan leads Southern with 18.1 points per game as well as 6.4 rebounds per contest while shooting 49.5% from the floor, 44.7% from three-point range and 88.9% from the free throw line … Marty Silvera averages 13.4 points per game with 6.9 assists and 2.6 steals … Kazell Stewart is averaging 11.9 points and 6.4 rebounds as well as 1.9 blocks … Stewart is coming off a 17-point, nine-rebound effort against Saint Rose … Sean James gives the Owls four players averaging double figures with 10.0 per game with 2.9 assists … Cherif Diarra leads Southern with 9.6 rebound per game, including 3.7 on the offensive end, with 8.7 points per game.

Southern Connecticut swimming & diving will compete against Yale and Pace this week to close out the first semester. The Owls will host a split meet on Thursday, Dec. 7 with Yale as the swimming events will be held at Hutchinson Natatorium ("The Hutch") at 4 p.m. while Yale will host the diving events. On Friday, Dec. 8, Southern will head to Pleasantville, N.Y. to take on Pace at 4 p.m. Southern will then enjoy a month break before closing the year against Bentley on Jan. 12, Saint Rose on Jan. 14 and at Adelphi on Jan. 20.
 
Women's Notes: Against Staten Island, first-year Owl Molly Kennedy won the 1000 Yard Freestyle and 100 Yard Freestyle events. In the 1000 Free, Kennedy posted a time of 11:18.03, defeated the second-place swimmer by 1:20.44. In the 100 Free, Kennedy touched at 55.90. She was also the lead leg in the 400 Freestyle Relay that posted an event-best time of 4:15.84 … Also against Staten Island, Owls' junior Arianna Arturi won the 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 25.11, finished second in the 100 Yard Butterfly with a time of 1:03.61 and had the top time in the 100 Breaststroke at 1:11.04 … Additionally, the Owls 400 Medley Relay team of Abby Lyons, Emma St. Hillaire, Sara Roney and Allyson Quitos won the event with a time of 4:15.90.
 
Men's Notes: Against Staten Island, Kobe Dominguez finished second in the 100 Yard Backstroke with a time of 54.63, and also posted the top time in the 100 Yard Breaststroke at 1:01.19. He was also part of the 400 Medley Relay team that won the event with a time of 3:40.17 … Adam Fred captured the 100 Backstroke event with a time of 54.38 and finished fourth in the 50 Freestyle with a time of 22.48. He was also part of a 400 Freestyle Relay team that posted a time of 3:21.13 … Additionally, the Owls' 400 Medley Relay team of J.D. Starkey, Travis Scott, Kobe Dominguez and Jack Fry won with a time of 3:40.17.

SCSU Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field will host the Art Kadish Elm City Challenge on Friday, Sept 8 and Saturday, Sept. 9 at James Moore Field House. Friday's event kicks off with the Pentathlon at 9 a.m. and resumes with running and field events at 3 p.m. On Saturday, the Heptathlon will begin at 8 a.m. with the field events slated to start at 4 p.m., following SCSU Women's Basketball's tilt against Bridgeport, followed by running events at 6:30 p.m.
 
Men's Notes: At Boston University's Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener, the Owls dominated the 600 Meter Run as they top five of the top nine spots. Hunter Dale finished third with a career-best time of 1:20.73 while Jack Mulcunry was fourth at 1:21.18. Marquis Whyte followed at 1:21.36 for fifth place while Besufekad Opstrup finished seventh at 1:23.07, which was also a career-best. Matthew Kilmer was ninth at 1:26.00 while Aiden Medina clocked in at 1:29.96 … Jonathan Volpe had a career-best 8:15.70 in the 3000 Meters while Willaim Lamburn had a career-best 14:55.18 in the 5000 Meters.
 
Women's Notes: The Owls'  "A" relay won the 4x400 relay at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener, as Avery WintersElla MacleanMegan Swan and Hannah Caiola crossed the finish line with a time of 3:55.46 … Winters and Caiola both turned in career-bests in the 300 Meters at 40.10 and 40.11, respectively … Maclean also had a personal-best time of 40.42 in the event ahead of Kisha Francois' career-best 40.54 … Courtney Henchcliffe ran a career-best time of 10:17.47 in the 3000 Meters.
