SCSU Women's Basketball Downs Franklin Pierce, 62-40, Behind Santoro's 24 Points

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut graduate transfer Isabella Santoro (Durham, Conn.) scored a career-best 24 points as the Owls cruised to a 62-40 Northeast 10 Conference win against Franklin Pierce at James Moore Field House. The Owls, winners of six of their last seven games, stand at 11-7 in NE10 play and 16-8 overall.

Santoro shot a blistering 9-of-10 from the floor, including 4-of-5 from three-point range. She also finished with eight rebounds and three assists, as well as two steals, in the Owls' win. Katie Williamson (Dublin, Ireland) came a rebound short of a double-double, finishing with 13 points and nine rebounds, as well as three assists. Delaney Connors (West Hartford, Conn.) had seven points and seven rebounds with five assists.

The game started with both teams trading baskets over the first minute before the Owls took off on a 12-2 run to take a 15-4 lead with just under four minutes to play in the first quarter. Franklin Pierce closed the first frame on an 8-3 run to head to the intermission with Southern lead, 18-12.

In the second quarter, the Owls opened up with a 16-6 to take a 34-18 lead with Williamson leading the way with eight points while Santoro provided six. Southern converted on 7-of-10 from the field in the run. Franklin Pierce bounced back an 8-2 run to cut Southern's lead to 36-26 at the break. At the half, Santoro was 4-for-4 from the floor with 10 points and three rebounds while Williamson checked in with 11 points and six boards.

The third quarter was forgettable for both teams, as the Owls outscored Franklin Pierce, 9-4, in the frame while both teams went scoreless over the final 3:17 of the quarter. That cold streak lasted almost four minutes into the fourth quarter before Franklin Pierce scored to cut Southern's lead to 45-32. The Owls then outscored the Ravens 17-10 over the final six minutes of play, with Santoro leading the way with eight points.

The Owls outscored the Ravens, 26-14, in the second half while shooting 10-for-25 from the floor and 4-for-11 from three-point range down the stretch, and holding Franklin Pierce to 5-for-26 shooting over the final 20 minutes.

Southern is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 18 when it travels to Springfield, Mass. for its final regular season road contest against American International. The Owls will then host Senior Night in its regular season finale against Assumption on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 5:30 p.m. at James Moore Field House.
