SCSU Women's Basketball Falls To Assumption, 56-50

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball lost to Assumption, 56-50, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at James Moore Field House. With the loss, Southern finished the regular season with a record of 16-10 overall and 11-9 in NE10 play while Assumption completes the season at 23-4 overall and 16-4 in conference action heading into the NE10 Conference Tournament.



Isabella Santoro (Durham, Conn.) totaled 16 points and 10 rebounds as well as four assists for her third double-double of the season. Ashley Evans (Londonderry, N.H.) had 13 points while Katie Williamson (Dublin, Ireland) totaled eight points and a season-high five steals.

The Owls' offense was clicking from the start of the game as Southern headed into halftime with a 27-16 lead that featured eight points apiece for Ashley Evans and Isabella Santoro while Katie Williamson also had six points. The Owls outscored Assumption, 12-8 through the first quarter, but held the Greyhounds scoreless over the final 4:38 of the first frame.

With the Owls leading 9-8 following an Assumption free throw at the 4:38 mark, the Owls went on a 12-1 run into the second quarter to take a 21-8 lead. After Teagan Curran knocked down a three-pointer to end the Greyhounds scoring drought at nine minutes, Assumption outscored the Owls, 8-6, down the stretch as the Owls went to the break with a nine-point lead.

The Owls hit a rough patch halfway through the third quarter. Leading 38-27 with 4:49 to play, Assumption took off on an 11-5 run to end the quarter. It was the Greyhounds 11-0 run to end the quarter that cut into the Owls' lead and send the game to the fourth quarter with Southern leading, 40-38.

The Greyhounds extended their scoring run to 20-0 to take a 49-40 lead with 5:51 to play. Santoro converted on a layup with five minutes to go in the game to end the Owls' scoreless stretch that lasted almost eight minutes. In the end, it was the Greyhounds 40-23 scoring advantage in the second half that proved the difference.

The seventh-seeded Owls are back in action on Friday, Feb. 24 when it hosts 10th seed Adelphi in a Northeast 10 Conference Tournament First Round game at James Moore Field House at 5 p.m. Tickets for the event will be $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and youth under 18 and free for NE10 students with valid ID.
