Weekly Preview: SCSU Basketball Hosts Two NE10 Games, Track & Field Hosts William Sutherland III Invitational

As students return to campus, men's and women's basketball will host a pair of Northeast-10 Conference matchups in Bentley on Tuesday, Jan. 16 and Franklin Pierce on Saturday, Jan. 20, while men's and women's track & field will host the William Sutherland III Invitational on Friday, Jan. 19.
 
Men's and women's swimming & diving will travel for its final meet of the season at Adelphi on Saturday, Jan. 20 and gymnastics will head to Brooklyn, N.Y. on Sunday, Jan. 21 to compete against LIU, Yale and New Hampshire.

SCSU Men's and Women's Basketball Ticket Information
Southern Connecticut men's and women's basketball tickets will be $7 for adults and $5 for children under 12 and seniors. Owls' fans can purchase tickets here. All SCSU students, staff and faculty are admitted free.

The Owls will host a pair of home dates on Tuesday, Jan. 16 against Bentley and Saturday, Jan. 20 against Franklin Pierce. Southern saw a three-game winning streak – against Saint Anselm, Saint Michael's and New Haven – come to an end with a loss this weekend at Southern New Hampshire and stand at 8-7 overall and 5-4 in the NE10 conference. Bentley is currently 13-2 and 8-1 in NE10 play and in first place in the conference standings while Franklin Pierce is 9-5 overall and trails the Owls in the standings at 4-5 in conference play.
 
Notes: Rheyna Steinauer had a career night for the Owls against New Haven, as she led the team with a career-high 19 points, a team-best nine rebounds and four steals, while knocking down three three-pointers and shot a team-best of 6-for-13 from the floor. In addition, with 1:32 left on the clock, the sophomore forward made two big free-throws, that gave Southern the lead for good in the Owls' 59-56 win on the road at UNH…Steinauer has seen her playing time increase over the Owls' last six games as she's averaging 9.5 points and 6.2 rebounds per game in the stretch … Katie Williamson leads the Owls in points (10.8), rebounds (6.7) and blocks (1.0) per game … Makenzie Helms averages 8.0 points and 3.1 assists per game and has scored in double figures in three of her last four games … Jillian Martin leads the team with 4.1 assists per game, with 6.1 points per game. In her last six games, Martin is averaging 7.3 assists and 6.5 points per contest.

Southern is currently 11-4 overall and 5-4 in the NE10 after losses in two of its last three games after a season-best seven-game winning streak. The Owls pulled out a thrilling 78-74 overtime win at New Haven and will look to get back to their winning ways against Bentley (10-6, 5-4 NE10) and Franklin Pierce (3-12, 1-8 NE10) this week.
 
Notes: Josh McGettigan continues to lead the Owls' offense with 19.5 points as well as 7.0 rebounds per game. Against New Haven, McGettigan poured in 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for his first double-double as an Owl, and knocked down the game-tying three-pointer that sent the game to overtime. McGettigan also iced the Owls' win with a pair of free throws in OT. He's scored in double figures in every game this season, including a season-best 28 points against Saint Michael's … Kazell Stewart was dominant against UNH, totaling 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting with seven rebounds and a career-best seven blocks … Stewart is averaging 13.9 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game … Marty Silvera continues to fill the box score as he averages 11.9 points, 6.9 assists, 4.7 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game.

Field Schedule: The men's and women's pole vault, long jump and weight throw will commence at 1 p.m, followed by the shot put and triple jump at 4 p.m. The field events conclude with the high jump at 6:30 p.m.
 
Track Schedule: All track events begin at 5 p.m. with the final event slated for an 8:40 p.m. start.
 
Men's Notes: In the Owls' last competition, the Art Kadish Invitational before the winter break,  Adelino Daveiga earned NE10 Indoor Field Athlete of the Week honors after he won the Weight Throw event with a distance of 18.29m, which stands as the 13th best throw in NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field this season and the top NE10 throw of the year. His throw of 60'00.25" was a personable best … Nolan Freeman won the 200 Meter run with a personal-best and meet record time of 22.04, which was the 13th best time of the year in NCAA Division II and the second-best NE10 time of the year. Freeman also finished second in the 55 Meters with a personal-best time of 6.44, which ranks as the top NE10 time of the year and third-best in the country, to date.
 
Women's Notes: At the Art Kadish Elm City Classic, first-year Owl Leticia DoNascimento finished second in the 600 Meter Run with a time of 1:44.04, which tied for the 15th-fastest time of the year, nationally. Among the NE10 ranks, it was the third-fastest time of the season, behind her own time and a teammate's time from last week … Kisha Francois was the lone Owl to win both a track and field event at this weekend's Art Kadish Elm City Classic. Francois posted a time of 25.45 to win the 200 Meter Run and also had a time of 7.28 to finish second in the 55 Meters. Her time in the 55M also stands as the second-best time of the season in NCAA Division II this year. She then followed with a win in the Long Jump with a distance of 5.55 Meters … Ella Maclean won the 55 Meter Run with a NCAA Division II best 7.08, which was also a personal best time. She then followed with a second-place finish in the 200 Meters with a time of 25.69.

SCSU Swimming & Diving will compete in its final regular-season meet when it travels to Garden City, N.Y. to take on Adelphi on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2024. 

Men's Notes: In the Owls' dual meet win against Bentley, Kobe Dominguez won the 200 Breaststroke event with a time of 2:14.29 and the 100 Breaststroke event with a time of 59.28, and was also part of the 200 Medley Relay team that won with a time of 1:37.27. In a tri-meet win against Assumption and Saint Rose, Dominguez finished second in the 200 Back with a time of 1:59.71 and was also part of the 400 Medley Relay (3:34.23) and 400 Freestyle Relay (3:19.45) teams that also won ... Owls freshman standout Drew Ladner had a busy weekend. Against Bentley in a dual meet victory, Ladner led the Owls with wins in the 200 Freestyle (1:45.60), 100 Freestyle (47.40) and the 100 Butterfly (53.83). On Sunday in a tri-meet win against Assumption and Saint Rose, Ladner was on the 400 Medley Relay (3:34.23) and 400 Freestyle Relay (3:19.45) teams that picked up wins and also finished third in the 50 Freestyle with a time of 22.00 ... Against Bentley, Jonathan Tressel posted a score of 195.45 on the 1 Meter board and 218.95 on the 3 Meter board. Against Assumption and Saint Rose, Tressel posted scores of 221.25 on the 1 Meter and 140.85 on the 3 Meter ... Against Assumption and Saint Rose, the Owls' 400 Medley Relay "A" comprised of Adam Fred, Kobe Dominguez, Henry Velazquez and Drew Ladner won the 400 Medley Relay, first event of the meet, with a time of 3:34.23.

Women's Notes: In a huge weekend against Northeast-10 Conference opponents, freshman Molly Kennedy won four out of the five individual events she swam in and also picked up a relay win. Against Bentley, Kennedy won the 50 Free (25.03), 100 Free (54.79) and finished second in the 200 Free (2:00.22). Against Assumption and Saint Rose, Kennedy won the 50 Free (25.11) and the 500 Free (5:33.73) after opening the competition with a win in the 400 Medley Relay (4:08.89) ... Against Bentley, Brooke Keeney won the 200 Freestyle event with a time of 1:59.15 and also finished second in the 200 Individual Medley (2:15.88). Against Assumption, Keeney won the 200 Backstroke with a time of 2:16.48 and was also on the 400 Freestyle Relay team that finished second at 3:51.79 ... Against Bentley, Nicholle Denault posted scores of 211.25 in the 1 Meter Diving event and 201.25 in the 3 Meter event. She followed against Assumption and Saint Rose with a 225.00 in the 1 Meter event and a 153.85 on the 3 Meter board ... Against Bentley, Southern Connecticut's "A" relay team comprised of Hailey Nyquist, Allyson Quitos, Justice Glasgow and Kali Dominguez took the 200 Yard Medley Relay with a time of 1:50.73.

SCSU Gymnastics opened the 2024 season with a 189.025 at the Rutgers January Quad Meet against host Rutgers, Oregon State and Utica.
 
Notes: The Owls opened their season with some great performances in all the events. The Owls' highest score came from senior Jayci Jordan, who came in seventh place on the Uneven Bars with a score of 9.750. Senior Hanna Zebdi was the top finisher for the Owls on the vault in 13th place with a score of 9.625. Junior Emelia Diaz recorded a team-best score of 9.675 on the balance beam and came in ninth place. Junior Libby Allen posted a team-best score of 9.600 on the floor and finished in 13th place. Southern's highest scoring event was the Vault with a total score of 47.600.
