WEEKLY PREVIEW: SCSU Basketball Plays Twice, Track & Field In Boston and Gymnastics Heads To Brown

It's a light week in New Haven as SCSU Athletics & Recreation will host a men's and women's basketball Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Saturday, Jan. 27 when the Owls host Assumption.

Before that, SCSU basketball will travel to Garden City to take on Adelphi on Wednesday, Jan. 24. SCSU indoor track & field will compete in the UMass Lowell River Hawk Invitational and the Boston University Terrier Classic on Friday, Jan. 26 and Saturday, Jan. 27 and gymnastics will travel to Brown on Sunday, Jan. 28.

SCSU Men's and Women's Basketball Ticket Information
Southern Connecticut men's and women's basketball tickets will be $7 for adults and $5 for children under 12 and seniors. Owls' fans can purchase tickets here. All SCSU students, staff and faculty are admitted free.

NOTES: Katie Williamson had her third double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds in a 58-38 win against Franklin Pierce. In addition, Katie Williamson also led the team with 12 points, five rebounds, two blocks and shot 100% from the free-throw line in a loss against Bentley … Delaney Haines led the Owls with 19 points, matching her season best, after a 7-of-9 showing from the floor, including a career-best 5-of-6 outing from three-point range in a 58-38 win against Franklin Pierce. Haines was on fire in the first half, knocking down 4-of-5 from three-point range and 6-of-8 from the floor.

Notes: In a 1-1 week, Marty Silvera averaged 17 points, 7.0 assists and 3.0 steals. Against Bentley, Silvera finished with 13 points, five assists and three steals. Against Franklin Pierce, Silvera had 21 points and nine assists to go along with three steals. For the year, Silvera is averaging 12.5 points, 6.9 assists and 2.4 steals per game.

Notes: At the William Sutherland III Invitational, Kisha Francois won the Long Jump event with a career-best distance of 5.86m while also posting the 14th-best mark in NCAA Division II indoor track & field, and tops in the NE10, this season … Patrice Mansfield won the 55 Meter Hurdles with a time of 8.60 for the fourth-best time in the country this season and the top NE10 time of the year … At the William Sutherland III Invitational, First-year Owl Megan Swan won the 55 Meters and the 200 Meters. Swan won the 55 Meters with a time of 7.45 and then won her second event of the evening with a win in the 200 Meters with a time of 26.38 … First-year Owl Belle Smith won the Shot Put event with a career-best distance of 11.87m, edging the second-place finisher from New Haven by 0.86m. Smith's mark was the second-best in the conference this season and the top freshman mark in the NE10.

Notes: At the William Sutherland III Invitational, Osaretin Osagie won the 55 Meter Hurdles with a time of 7.67, which stands as the fourth-best time in the country … Dylan Torok won the Pole Vault event with a height of 4.15m, defeating the next best competitor, from NCAA Division I Sacred Heart, at 2.95m, or just over four feet. He then finished second in the High Jump at 1.90 … Freshman Eduardo Cuello Briones won the 300 Meters with a time of 37.36 … Cameron Belton (Shot Put) and Adelino Daveiga (Weight Throw) also picked up wins for the Owls.

Notes: At this past weekend's LIU Quad Meet against LIU, New Hampshire and Yale, the Owls posted multiple career-high scores in three of the events they competed in. Southern Connecticut saw its highest score of the meet, from freshman Gigi Mastellone, where she recorded a career-high score of 9.800 and came in fourth place on the uneven bars. Brianna Dorr recorded a career-best and team-best score on the vault of 9.750 and finished in sixth place in the event. On the balance beam, Alexa Melanson posted a team-best score of 9.725 and came in fourth place. In the floor exercise, Libby Allen and Erica Beyer both recorded a team-best score of 9.725 and finished in 12th place. The balance beam was the highest scoring event for the Owls, as they recorded a total score of 48.175.
