SCSU Women's Basketball Defeats Saint Michael's, 60-41

COLCHESTER, VT. - Southern Connecticut women's basketball defeated Saint Michael's College, 60-41 in an NE10 matchup on Saturday afternoon. The Owls improved to an overall record of 15-10 and an NE10 record of 12-7, while the Purple Knights dropped to an overall record of 5-19 and an NE10 record of 1-17. 

Makenzie Helms led the team with 13 points, six rebounds, a team-best of five assists, a team-best of four steals, a team-best of two blocks and shot a team-best of 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. 

Rheyna Steinauer recorded 10 points, shot a team-best of 4-for-7 from the floor and made two three-pointers against the Purple Knights. Julianna Bonilla scored nine points, made two three-pointers, had two steals, two assists and grabbed two rebounds for the Owls. 

Katie Williamson, Hope Fox and Delaney Haines each had eight points. Williamson led the team with nine rebounds, two blocks and was 100% from the free-throw line. Haines made a team-best of five throws, grabbed four rebounds, had two assists and a steal. Fox recorded four rebounds, two three-pointers, a steal and was 100% from the free-throw line. Ashley Evans had five rebounds, two blocks and an assist against Saint Michael's.

Saint Michael's got off to a hot start in the first quarter with a 13-7 lead. However, in the second quarter, the Owls worked hard to make their comeback as they tied the game going into halftime with less than a minute to go with a three-pointer by Hope Fox, to even the game at 25-25 with the Purple Knights. 

In the third quarter, Makenzie Helms opened the scoring for Southern with a jumper. From that point on, it was a back and forth battle between the two teams until the last few minutes of the quarter where in total, the Owls scored 13 points. In the fourth quarter, Southern Connecticut began to pull away from Saint Michael's as they finished the game by outscoring them 22-7, to get their fourth-straight victory. 

The Owls return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 5:30 p.m. against Southern New Hampshire University in an NE10 matchup at the James Moore Field House in New Haven, Connecticut.
