Leckey & Taylor Score, Miller Blanks STAC As Field Hockey Wins 2-0

SPARKILL, N.Y. – Southern Connecticut field hockey defeated St. Thomas Aquinas, 2-0, in a non-conference matchup in Sparkill, N.Y. The Owls' first win of the season gave them a 1-2 mark early in the year while STAC dropped them to 0-3.

Taylor Leckey and Isabella Taylor both scored for the Owls with both standing as the first of their SCSU careers. Leckey joined the Owls prior to the start of last season after transferring from two-time NCAA Division III National Championships Middlebury College. Mia Oliverio also picked up her first point of the season with an assist on Taylor's goal. Owls' goalkeeper Rachel Miller had another brilliant performance as she turned back seven shots-on-goal for her first shutout of the season.

Leckey scored to start the second quarter. After a midfield turnover by the Spartans, Leckey picked up a loose ball and took off into the offensive zone. She maneuvered through traffic, drifted to the right of the goal and blasted a shot over the goalie's right shoulder to the top corner to give Southern a 1-0 lead.

That lead held until five minutes into the fourth quarter. Natalia Fiato broke up a clearing attempt by St. Thomas Aquinas on the sideline opposite the Owls' bench and then dribbled deep into the Spartans' defensive zone. Zipping around defenders, Fiato centered a pass to the front of the goal where Oliverio touched a pass to Taylor, who popped in her first career goal to give Southern the 2-0 lead.

Southern returns to action when it travels to Springfield, Mass. to take on American International College on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 4 p.m.
