SCSU Women's Basketball Falls to Dominican, 72-67

Box Score ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball fell to Dominican, 72-67 in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday evening. The Chargers improved to an overall record of 3-7 while the Owls dropped to an overall record of 5-3.
 
Tish Blackwood had a impressive game for Southern, in which she recorded the first double-double of her career with a career-best of 23 points and a team-best of 10 rebounds. She was 11-for-13 from the floor, had a team-best and career-best of four steals and was 100% from the free-throw line. 
 


Jada Williams had 12 points, as she was 6-for-8 from the floor and grabbed four boards. Rheyna Steinauer had 11 points with six boards and two assists. Hope Fox had nine points, as she was 2-for-2 from the free-throw line, had a team-best of four assists, two steals and a block. Taeya Steinauer had six points and a team-best of four assists, while Iyanna Cotten had three assists against the Chargers. 

In the first quarter, Jada Williams got the scoring started for the Owls, with an assist from Rheyna Steinauer. It was a defensive battle between both teams; however, Steinauer and Williams continued to put points on the board, to take a 9-5 lead. The Chargers came back to tie the score at 11-11, Tish Blackwood and Arianna Gerkin helped Southern take back a four-point lead heading into the second.
 
In the second quarter, early on, Southern continued to have the lead, with made baskets from Hope Fox, Taeya Steinauer and Tish Blackwood. Dominican began to find their momentum as they tied the score before taking the lead back. The Chargers extended their advantage to seven before Tish Blackwood and Jada Williams cut the lead to five points. Dominican headed into halftime, up 36-31 over Southern Connecticut.
 
In the third quarter, the Owls looked to make a comeback as Rheyna Steinauer and Jada Williams scored made layups, to cut the lead to 40-35. Dominican kept making shots to extend their lead yet again; however, Tish Blackwood dominated the floor for Southern Connecticut. Blackwood scored eight points in a row for the Owls to take the lead back, 44-43. The Chargers put points back on the board from the free-throw line as they stayed in control. Maya Henry and Fox made tough jumpers in the paint, to bring the Owls back within five points of Dominican.
 
In the fourth quarter, Tish Blackwood, Hope Fox and Jada Williams helped Southern get within a point of the Chargers' lead, with six minutes left in the game. However, Dominican didn't go away as they made big free throws and shots down the stretch to keep hold of the lead. Rheyna Steinauer made back-to-back baskets for the Owls, as they were within three points of Dominican, with 1:15 left. Nonetheless, the Chargers held on to take the 72-67 victory over the Owls.
 
The Owls will return to action on Saturday, December 20 at 12:00 pm in the Moore Field House in a non-conference matchup against Bridgeport. Southern will then wrap up 2025 on Wednesday, December 31 at 12:00 pm in a non-conference matchup against Post in the Moore Field House.
