SCSU Women's Basketball Falls To Saint Michael's, 80-79, In Double Overtime

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball lost a double-overtime heartbreaker to Saint Michael's, 80-79, in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at James Moore Field House. With the loss, Southern dropped to 16-5 overall and 9-5 in the NE10 while Saint Michael's improved to 9-11 overall and 6-8 in conference play.

Delaney Haines hit on 12-of-18 from the floor including 4-of-6 from three-point range on her way to a game-high 31 points, while also adding five assists. Katie Williamson had 12 points, five rebounds and three steals and Rheyna Steinauer scored 10 points for the Owls. Hope Fox finished with seven points and a team-high eight rebounds while Ally Sentance finished with eight points, four rebounds and three assists.



Southern opened the game with a 9-0 run as four different Owls scored in the game-opening run. St. Michael's responded and outscored Southern, 14-7, over the final four minutes of the first quarter as the Owls held onto a 16-14 lead at the first break. The Owls outscored the Purple Knights, 16-6, to start the second quarter to take a 32-20 lead with 3:28 to go until the half and ultimately held Saint Michael's to just eight points in the second quarter to head into the break with a 10-point lead, 32-22.

Saint Michael's took control in the third quarter, opening the second half with a 14-4 run to tie the game at 36-36 with 4:48 to play. The teams traded baskets over the remaining time in the quarter, but the Purple Knights outscored Southern, 20-11, as the Owls led by a point, 43-42, heading to the final quarter.

In the fourth, Southern outscored Saint Michael's, 10-5, over the first six minutes of the quarter to take a 53-47 lead, it's largest of the second half. Saint Michael's, after hitting on just one of its first nine shots of the fourth, knocked down 2-of-3 from three-point range to power an 8-1 run to take a two-point lead, 55-53, with 1:39 to play. After Rheyna Steinauer converted on 1-of-2 from free throw line, Southern got a stop on the other end before Haines gave the Owls a 56-55 lead with under a minute to play.

Saint Michael's converted on the other end of the floor to take the lead, 57-56, before a loose ball foul on the Owls gave Saint Michael's a pair of free throws. With the Purple Knights leading, 59-56, with 16 seconds remaining. Ally Sentence launched a three to tie it, but it was blocked and went out of bounds with 6.2 seconds to play. The inbound pass went back to Sentance who handed it off to Jillian Martin. Martin zipped a pass across court to Haines who threw up a shot at the buzzer that banked in to tie the game and send it to overtime, 59-59.

In overtime, the teams went back-and-forth with Saint Michael's controlling the lead. Haines came up big, again, on back-to-back possessions converting from midrange. With the Purple Knights leading, 66-65, Steinauer converted on a pair of free throws to give the Owls the lead. Sentance then came up with a steal and then found open space in front of the Owls' bench to knock down a big three to give Southern a 70-66 lead with 27 seconds to play. Saint Michael's responded with a three before Fox hit a pair of free throws to push Southern's lead to 72-69. With 11 seconds left, Saint Michael's once-again tied the game on a three-pointer, 72-72. In the closing seconds, Southern missed a shot then the ensuing inbound pass was tipped out of bounds on a contested call that appeared to go off a Saint Michael's player, but was rewarded back to the Purple Knights.

In the second overtime, Saint Michael's mounted a 78-74 lead with 2:36 to play. Renza Milner then came up with her second blocked shot of overtime to get the Owls the ball back. On the next trip down the court, it was Haines with another big three-pointer to pull Southern within a point, 78-77. A Purple Knights' turnover put the ball back in the Owls' hands and set up Haines for the layup to give Southern a 79-78 lead. With three seconds remaining, Sentance was called for a foul that put Saint Michael's Makayla Blake at the line for a pair of free throws and the 80-79 lead. Following an Owls' timeout, Fox inbounded the ball to Milner, who handed it back to Fox. Fox's drive to the basket was off as time expired.

Southern is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 8 when it travels to Manchester, N.H. to take on Southern New Hampshire.
