WORCESTER, Mass. - Southern Connecticut women's basketball was defeated by Assumption University, 63-52 on the road on Saturday afternoon. The Owls dropped to an overall record of 17-7 and an NE10 record of 10-7 while the Greyhounds improved to an overall record of 14-12 and an NE10 record of 7-11.
Delaney Haines led the team with 19 points, made three three-pointers, was 2-for-4 from the free-throw line, grabbed two boards and had two assists.
Renza Milner recorded nine points, as she was 4-for-4 from the floor and grabbed two rebounds.
Katie Williamson scored eight points, had four rebounds and a steal.
Jillian Martin had six points, was 2-for-2 from the free-throw line and had two assists.
Hope Fox and
Rheyna Steinauer scored four points each, with Fox leading the Owls in rebounds with eight and assists with four. Steinauer grabbed five boards, had an assist and a steal against the Greyhounds.
In the first quarter, the Owls outscored the Greyhounds, 14-12 as
Delaney Haines scored eight points in the first 10 minutes of play. In the second quarter, Assumption came out of their huddle with momentum as they entered halftime with a close 24-19 lead. In the third quarter, the Owls did their best to make a comeback but the Greyhounds continued to pull away. In the fourth quarter, Assumption never gave up control of the lead as time ticked down, as they finished the game with a 63-52 victory.
The Owls will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 5:30 p.m. in West Haven, Conn. against NE10 and Elm-City rival, University of New Haven. Southern Connecticut will return to Moore Field House on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 1:30 p.m. against Franklin Pierce in NE10 play.
