Dr. Mercedes Himmons Appointed To NCAA Committee On Access, Opportunity and Impact

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (AP) — Dr. Mercedes Himmons, assistant athletic trainer and assigned diversity and inclusion designee at Southern Connecticut State University, has been appointed to the NCAA Committee on Access, Opportunity and Impact.

"I'm honored and elated to be selected to serve on this newly established committee," Himmons said. "A huge part of my 'why' is rooted in student-athletes and their experiences. Working with colleagues across the NCAA to improve access, opportunity and impact for student-athletes perfectly aligns with my values."

Himmons is one of the select representatives from NCAA Division II serving on the association-wide committee. The committee was formed by consolidating four committees: the Committee on Women's Athletics, the Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee, the Board of Governors Committee to Promote Cultural Diversity and Equity, and the Gender Equity Task Force. The restructuring aims to increase efficiency and maximize diversity, equity and inclusion efforts within the NCAA.

Himmons brings experience to the committee, having served as SCSU's NCAA assigned diversity and inclusion designee for most of her tenure. She also serves as the District 2 Ethnic Diversity Advisory Committee representative for the National Athletic Trainers' Association. Himmons will work with college athletics colleagues and NCAA staff to create equitable and inclusive experiences for student-athletes, advise on NCAA policies and support increased participation and leadership opportunities for underrepresented student-athletes.

The committee's first meeting is set for Sept. 24-25 in Indianapolis, where members will begin planning ways to improve access, opportunity and representation in collegiate sports.
