WORCESTER, Mass. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball fell to Assumption, 54-48 on Tuesday evening in an NE10 matchup. The Greyhounds improved to an overall record of 17-5 and an NE10 record of 9-5. The Owls dropped to an overall record of 17-5 and an NE10 record of 12-2.
Tish Blackwood recorded her ninth double-double of the season with a team-best of 12 points, a team-best of 13 rebounds, was 4-for-4 from the free-throw line and had two steals.
Taeya Steinauer had nine points, grabbed five rebounds, had a team-best of three assists and three steals.
Jillian Martin and
Ally Sentance had seven points each, as Martin recorded three steals and Sentence grabbed three boards and went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.
Hope Fox and
Maya Henry had six points each, as Fox grabbed three boards while Henry went 2-for-2 from the floor, had two rebounds and a block against the Greyhounds.
In the first quarter, the Greyhounds opened with a 11-2 run against the Owls. It was
Jillian Martin who started the scoring for Southern, with a driving layup. In the second quarter, the Owls started their comeback with a made free-throw by
Rheyna Steinauer and a made layup by
Tish Blackwood. After that, the Owls defense stepped up and points from
Taeya Steinauer and
Hope Fox helped Southern get within a point of Assumption. The Greyhounds headed into halftime up 17-16, over Southern.
In the third quarter,
Tish Blackwood made a good turnaround jumper in the paint, to take an 18-17 lead, within the first minute of play. Following that, both teams went back and forth, trading the lead. Assumption then went on a 6-0 run and extended their advantage to five points. Four made free-throws by
Ally Sentance helped Southern get within three points of the Greyhounds' lead of 28-25, heading into the fourth.
In the fourth quarter, Assumption went on an 8-0 run and continued to use their momentum to extend their lead. Nonetheless, the Owls continued to stay within reach as
Tish Blackwood and
Maya Henry added points for Southern, to get within single digits of Assumption. The Greyhounds kept putting points on the board, as time ticked down. Four huge free-throws by Blackwood and a three-pointer from Henry allowed the Owls to get within a few points of Assumption but ultimately, the Greyhounds held on to the 54-48 victory.
The Owls will return home to the James Moore Field House for an NE10 matchup on Saturday, February 14 at 1:30 pm against American International.

Women's Basketball game at 1:30 PM, followed by the
Men's Basketball game at 3:30 PM. Fans attending either (or both!) games can enjoy the excitement of competition alongside a dynamic drag performance that brings energy, joy, and visibility to the celebration.
