SCSU Women's Basketball Tops Saint Michael's, 88-63

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut rolled to a 88-63 win against Saint Michael's in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at James Moore Field House. With the win, the Owls improved to 20-5 and 15-2 in the NE10 while the Purple Knights dropped to 13-12 overall and 8-9 in the NE10.

Rheyna Steinauer led five Owls in double figures with 22 points as well as six assists and four rebounds while adding three steals. Ally Sentance had 18 points while both players were 5-of-7 from three-point range. As a team, the Owls hit on 15-of-21 (71.4%) from three-point range and converted on 54.5% (30-55) from the floor. Hope Fox had 16 points and six assists with three steals while Tish Blackwood totaled 15 points and 12 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season. Taeya Steinauer finished with 14 points for the game.



The first quarter saw both teams battle to a two-point difference as Southern led, 19-17, through the first 10 minutes of the game. With two minutes left in the first quarter, and carrying over to the midway point of the second quarter, Southern went on a 24-4 as the Owls pushed its lead to 37-19. Southern hit on 9-of-13 from the floor during the run, including 4-of-6 from three-point range. Taeya totaled 12 of the Owls' 24 points in the run. The Owls outscored Saint Michael's, 18-2, over the first five minutes of the second quarter and closed the half with a 49-27 lead.

Southern had three players in double figures at the break, led by Taeya's 14 points while Ally Sentence came off the bench to hit 5-of-7 from the floor including 4-of-5 from long range on her way to 14 points.

Southern pushed it's lead to 54-27, its largest of the game, in the opening minutes of the second half. Saint Michael's bounced back and outscored Southern, 20-9, to chip away at the Owls' lead as Southern led, 63-47, with a minute to go. The Purple Knights outscored the Owls, 23-17, in the third.

In the fourth, Southern opened the period with an 8-0 run with Rheyna Steinauer knocking down a pair of three's in the quarters opening minutes. Southern's biggest lead of the game came with less than five minutes to play when they led, 83-52. With the Owls' starters out of the game, Saint Michael's closed the gap in the final minutes as the Owls hung on for the 88-63 win.

Southern will wrap up the regular season with its final game of the year on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at Franklin Pierce at 5:30 p.m. The Owls will host a NE10 Championship First Round Game on  Sunday, March 1 at 1:30 p.m. with their opponent to be determined.
