SCSU Women’s Basketball Falls To Holy Family, 61-51, In NCAA East Region Semifinals

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – No. 1 Southern Connecticut women's basketball was defeated by No. 5 Holy Family, 61-51, in the NCAA East Region Semifinals, on Saturday evening at James Moore Field House. The Owls finish the season with a 25-6 record while the Tigers improved to an overall record of 28-3.
 
Rheyna Steinauer scored a team-leading 25 points and was 5-for-8 from beyond the arc and grabbed three boards. Tish Blackwood had her 12th double-double of the season with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Ally Sentance had six points and was 2-for-4 from beyond the arc. Hope Fox had four points, four assists, three steals and three boards. Taeya Steinauer and Jillian Martin had four assists, each, against the Tigers.


 
In the first quarter, the Owls got their scoring started with a Tish Blackwood jumper. The Tigers responded with a made layup, but Southern Connecticut went on an 8-2 run, that was fueled by points from Rheyna Steinauer and Tish Blackwood. Holy Family put some points back on the board, but Taeya Steinauer and Tish Blackwood added to the Owls' total before the quarter ended with a 14-10, lead in favor of Southern.
 
In the second quarter, Ally Sentance hit a good three-pointer for the Owls, to put them up by seven. The Owls pushed to a 10-point lead with three straight, three-pointers from Rheyna Steinauer. However, the Tigers finished the half on a 4-0 run, to get within six points of the Owls' lead.
 
In the third quarter, Holy Family hit a made three-pointer, to get within three of Southern. From then, the Tigers continued with their momentum and took the lead, with seven minutes left. Rheyna Steinauer hit two free-throws to tie the game at 30-30. However, Holy Family retook the lead with a made and-one layup. This back-and-forth pace would continue for the rest of the game as the Owls came back to take a five point lead with points from Rheyna, Ally Sentance and Hope Fox. Going into the fourth quarter, Holy Family and Southern were tied 42-42.
 
In the fourth quarter, the Tigers opened the final 10 minutes of play with a 6-0 run. The Owls looked to make a comeback as Rheyna Steinauer, Tish Blackwood and Hope Fox, got within two points of the Tigers, with two minutes left. After that, Holy Family hung on and got the 61-51 victory over the Owls.
