Maureen Spellman is is in her fifth season as head coach of the Southern Connecticut State University women’s lacrosse program in 2017-18 after one year on the Owls’ sidelines as an assistant coach. In that time, she has led the program to its most successful five-year stretch in school history. Spellman also serves as a Co-Advisor for the Owls' Student-Athlete Advisory Commitee (SAAC).

Spellman also has recruited and coached the program's career leaders in goals, assists and points, with several other current Owls on pace to set program records for groundballs and draw controls before the conclusion of their careers.

In 2017, the Owls again matched a program single-season record for victories and saw Nicole Healey collect All-Conference laurels at the conclusion of the campaign. Spellman also guided the team to its best start in program history. Academically, three Owls were named to the IWLCA All-Academic Team, while the entire squad was also recognized by the IWLCA for their combined work in the classroom.

The Owls finished the 2016 season by matching a program single-season record for victories. SCSU was highly competitive, losing eight contests by a combined total of 14 goals. Two Owls were named to the NE-10 All-Rookie Team, with two earning academic honors from the IWLCA for their work in the classroom.

Preceding a three-win campaign in 2015, the women’s lacrosse team enjoyed its most successful campaign in program history in 2014. The Owls closed the year with four victories. Jennifer McCarthy was named to the Northeast-10 Conference All-Rookie Team, while Erica Martino was named to the NE-10 Women’s Lacrosse All-Academic Team.

In addition, SCSU had 16 student-athletes recognized for their work in the classroom as selections to the Northeast-10 Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

Spellman joined the Owls after a decorated four-year career as a goalie for the University of New Haven. The Chargers’ all-time saves leader, she was a two-time All-Region and All-Northeast-10 Conference pick during her time at UNH.

Additionally, Spellman earned WomensLacrosse.com Division II All-Rookie Team honors along with Northeast-10 Goalkeeper of the Year laurels in her rookie season.

She ranked among the NCAA leaders in goals against average as a freshman and senior and in save percentage as a junior and senior. Spellman also ranked among the NCAA leaders in saves as a junior.

Also a coach at the Skyhawks Sports Academy and active with the Connecticut Special Olympics, she holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of New Haven.
