Now in his 27th season at the helm of the Southern Connecticut State University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams, Tim Quill has built the top swimming & diving program in the Northeast-10 Conference and one of the top programs in the country. Both the men’s and women’s squads have risen to new heights over the course of Quill’s stint.
He is a 28-time Northeast-10 Conference Coach of the Year and six-time Metropolitan Conference Coach of the Year. Heading into the 2025-26 season, SCSU Swimming and Diving have each won 17 NE10 Championships, out of 21 NE10 championship seasons all-time since 2003, including five-straight for the women's program and four consecutive titles for the men. Prior to the creation of NE10 swimming, Quill guided the Owls to seven Metropolitan Conference championships (2003-06, men; 2005-07, women).
In addition, both squads have posted their best team finishes at the NCAA Division II Championships. The men’s team placed seventh in 2002, while the women were ninth in 2010. The women’s squad has set a new NCAA best on three occasions under Quill’s guidance.
On the individual front, the accolades have been nothing short of remarkable. Quill has coached a total of 121 NCAA All-America selections (63 men, 58 women). In addition, Ben Michaelson, (three-time NCAA Division II Swimmer of the Year), Kristen Frost (2008 NCAA Division II Swimmer of the Year), Amanda Thomas (two-time NCAA Division II Swimmer of the Year) and Raymond Cswerko have combined to win 19 individual national titles.
Furthermore, Quill has coached 22 Conference Championship MVP’s, 11 Northeast-10 Freshmen of the Year, including 2023-24's Molly Kennedy, and 20 NE-10 Swimmers of the Year, including 2024-25's Justice Glasgow.
Additionally, the Owls have had nearly 600 Northeast-10 individual champions since the formation of the league championship in 2003.
Quill’s swimmers have also rewritten the University and conference record books. Southern Connecticut swimmers have broken nearly 100 university records and seven NCAA Division II records during Quill’s tenure.
Prior to his arrival at Southern Connecticut, Quill coached the Cheshire YMCA (1990-99) to a third place finish at the YMCA National Championships. On the individual front, he coached three YMCA national champions and over 100 YMCA All-Americans.
Quill also serves as head coach of the Southern Connecticut (SoNoCo) Swim Club. In that role, he has produced over 100 USA National top 16 performers including Michaelson, the first Southern swimmer to qualify for the U.S. Olympic trials and once ranked among the top 100-meter butterfly performers in the world. Michaelson won two gold medals for the U.S. at the 2003 Pan American Games SoNoCo club member Geoff Rathgeber was a member of the 2007 U.S. Pan American team.
Quill, a former member of the USA Swimming National Camps committee, was also a speaker at the American Swim Coaches Association world coaches clinic in 2006 and is on the USA National Team coaches list.
He graduated from Alfred University in 1989 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a minor in athletic coaching. He captained the swim team and was a four-time All-America selection.
Tim and his wife, Brenda, reside in Woodbridge, Conn. They are the parents of twins, Lilianna and Timothy Quill V.
