Oghenefejiro Onakpoma had a standout career with the Owls, competing mainly in the long jump and triple jump. Onakpoma qualified for the NCAA National Championships in the triple jump six times, three times during the indoor season and three times during the outdoor season, and earned Outdoor All-American status in 2019, and 2021 and Indoor All-American honors in 2019 and 2020. He was a three-time USTFCCCA East Region Male Athlete of the Year, two-time NE10 Field Athlete of the Year, two-time New England Triple Jump Champion, and four-time NE10 Triple Jump Conference Champion.
In 2018, Onakpoma set the NE10 Outdoor Conference Championship Meet Triple Jump Record with a leap of 15.44 meters, and set the SCSU Outdoor Triple Jump Record at 15.68 meters at the 2021 National Championships. He was also a four-time USTFCCCA All-Region East Top Performer, and seven-time USTFCCCA All-Region East selection.
At Naugatuck (Conn.) High School, he was an All-New England and All-State selection. Onakpoma was the Class L Long Jump Champion, two-time Class L Triple Jump Champion, Most Outstanding Jumper honoree, and Class L State Open and New England triple jump champion.
