NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Laura Brustolon (Mystic, Conn.) of the women’s indoor track and field team and senior Diwani Augustine (East Hartford, Conn.) of the men’s indoor track and field team have been named as the Comcast/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Month for February.
Brustolon led the Owls in the distance events once again in the month of February. She won the mile at the Northeast-10 Conference Championships with a time of 4:57.24. That time was a new Northeast-10 record and also served as a NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
She followed that up by winning the New England championship in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:52.79. The mark was a new SCSU record and an automatic qualifying mark for the NCAA Championships, which will take place in Albuquerque, N.M. on March 12-13.
Augustine came through with a series of clutch performances in February. He helped the Owls hold off the rest of the field at the Northeast-10 Championships by winning the triple jump (49 feet, 4.25 inches), the final event of the competition. He also finished second in the 55 meters (6.47 seconds) and third in the long jump (23 feet, 4 inches) at the NE-10’s as the Owls won their eighth straight indoor championship.
He then won the New England championship in the long jump (23 feet, 4 inches) as the Owls placed fourth out of 34 teams – and tops among Division II programs. Augustine also placed second in the triple jump (47 feet, 11.75 inches) and sixth in the 55 meters (6.47 seconds) to earn All-New England laurels in those events.
For the second consecutive year, Comcast is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Month’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Month’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each month for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
