Four Double-Doubles Lead Volleyball Team Past Mercy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Four players recorded double-doubles on the evening as the Southern Connecticut State University Volleyball team defeat Mercy 3-1 on Tuesday night at Dobbs Ferry High School. The Owls dropped the first game, 31-29, before winning the next three by scores of 31-29, 30-28 and 30-25. Four players tallied double-doubles in the victory for SCSU. The win pushes the Owls record to 7-8 (1-1 NE-10) while Mercy falls to 5-6 (0-0 ECC) with the loss.

Junior Nekane Mendizabal (Stratford, Conn.) led the way for SCSU offensively, as she recorded 14 kills to go with 13 digs for her team-leading fifth double-double of the season. Junior Lauren Coombs (Trumbull, Conn.) was the only other Owl to post 10 or more kills, as she notched 11 to go with 14 digs for her second double-double of the season. Her sister, junior Ashley Coombs (Trumbull, Conn.) led SCSU with 23 assists and paired that with 11 digs for her second double-double in as many matches. Sophomore Manjit Chase (Alexandria, Va.) was the final member of the double-double brigade, as she dished out 19 assists to go with 13 digs. Sophomore Marcia Hollingsworth (Alexandria, Va.) narrowly missed a double-double as well with nine kills and nine blocks (two solo) in the match.

On the other side of the net, Diana Bruzzone led Mercy with 20 kills and 17 digs (tied for the match-high) for a double-double of her own. Mariola St. Fleur posted a match-high 21 kills while Trevene Smith handed out a match-high 45 assists. Mirlusca Montes tied Bruzzone for the match-high with 17 kills.

The Owls return to the court on Friday, September 21 when they return home to host St. Rose in a Northeast-10 Conference match. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Pelz Gymnasium in New Haven, Conn.
