Southern Connecticut State University Athletic Department Teams Up With American Cancer Society For Three Awareness Events In February

The SCSU athletic department and the American Cancer Society are teaming up for the second straight year to promote breast cancer awareness.
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University Athletic Department announced today that it will join up with the American Cancer Society for three events in the month of February to promote breast cancer awareness. Representatives from the ACS New England Division will be on site for the Owls' February 7 gymnastics meet, as well as the women's basketball games on February 14 and February 18. This marks that second straight year that the organizations have teamed up for this cause.

The women's basketball contests are part of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association 'Pink Zone' initiative, which promotes heightened awareness for breast cancer within the sport of women's basketball, on college campuses and in the general community.

Fans are encouraged to wear pink to all of those contests at Moore Fieldhouse, and will also receive special promotional giveaways.

The women's basketball team will once again wear pink uniforms this season – and remain as one of just a handful of programs across the country to do so. Game time for Owls' Feb. 14 contest against Stonehill is 1:30 p.m., while the Feb. 18 tilt against Bentley is a 5:30 p.m. start.

The gymnastics team will feature several pink accents as part of their traditional attire for their 1 p.m. meet against SUNY-Brockport, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Rhode Island College.

“We are thrilled to partner up with the American Cancer Society once again in 2009,” said Director of Athletics Patricia D. Nicol. “Extending this initiative to our gymnastics program provides additional opportunities for educating our fans about breast cancer awareness. We anticipate a series of events with both our gymnastics and women's basketball programs that demonstrate a true sense of excitement and fellowship amongst both Southern Connecticut fans and the entire campus community.”

“I am very excited to once again participate with Southern Connecticut State University for a series of events to heighten local awareness of the Breast Cancer Health Awareness Initiative, increase our relationships with local colleges and universities, and most importantly encourage breast cancer prevention and early detection,” said Mary Kate Carofano, Community Executive, Development, American Cancer Society.

The American Cancer Society helps patients and their families with free information, support and local resources. Cancer information specialists are available by phone 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to help with diagnosis and treatment options, find rides to treatment, or answer insurance questions.
