Owls Lose To UMass Lowell In Conference Play

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman guard Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) scored a game-high 19 points on Saturday but the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team fell to UMass Lowell, 73-54. Carberry was 6-of-12 from the floor and was a perfect 5-of-5 from the line.

Southern is now 2-18 overall and 1-14 in the Northeast-10 Conference while the River Hawks improved to 13-7 and 10-5 in the NE-10.

UMass Lowell pressured the Owls right from the start as they jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead. However, Southern maintained its composure and went on a 7-0 run of their own in less than two minutes to cut the deficit to three. The series of runs would come to an end as the remainder of the half went back and forth but the River Hawks would take a 38-29 lead heading into halftime.

The second half began the same way as the first. UMass Lowell went on a 8-0 run to begin the final twenty minutes of regulation and the momentum would carry over as they claimed a 73-54 victory.

The River Hawks shot 53.6% from the floor compared to the Owls 38.5%. Despite the team's struggles from the floors, Southern was hot from the line. They went 21-for-24 and were a perfect 11-for-11 in the second half. UMass Lowell was just 38.5% from the line (5-of-13).

Sophomore forward Kieran Ramsey (North Hollywood, Calif.) added double-digit points with 10 and also grabbed six rebounds. Sophomore guard Chris Harris (Brooklyn, N.Y.) dished out a team-high six assists and junior center Dexton Williamson (Bridgeport, Conn.) grabbed a game-high seven rebounds. Williamson scored nine points as well and rejected two shots.

Kyle Caiola led the River Hawks with 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting and dished out a game-high eight assists.

The Owls return to Moore Field House for their next contest on January 3 to host Le Moyne at 7:30 p.m.
