NEW HAVEN, Conn.-  The Southern Connecticut State University women's swimming and diving team came up short despite valiant efforts Saturday afternoon, as Marist defeated the Owls, 178-117.

First place finishes included junior Amanda Thomas (Oakville Conn.) with three first place finishes in the 100 yard backstroke (59.31), the 200 breaststroke (2:26.88) and the 400 individual medley (4:30.35) Senior Jessica Rickel (Seymour, Conn.) captured first place in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:10.63).

Senior Nicole Huerta (Santo Domingo, D.R.) helped the Owls with a second place finish in the 1650 yard freestyle with a time of 18:26.90. Freshman Courtney Silva (Burnsville, Minn.) took second place with a final time of 2:16.55. Silva also added another second place finish in the 400 individual medley with a final time of 4:55.91. Teammate Sarah Thompson (Davenport, Iowa) chipped in with a second place finish in the 50 yard freestyle (26.38).

Anna Pleban (Seymour, Conn.) notched second place in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.41.

The Owls are back in action Sunday, Jan. 15 against Connecticut College at 1 p.m.
