Final Meet Results
NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut women's swimming and diving team showed strong resilience but came up short as the Owls were defeated 161-136 by Connecticut College Sunday afternoon.
Junior
Amanda Thomas (Oakville, Conn.) led Southern with three first place finishes in the 200 freestyle (1:59.49), the 200 yard butterfly (2:07.36) and the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 59.20. Freshman
Rachel Smolensky (Norwalk, Conn.) added another first place finish for the Owls in the 100 backstroke (1:02.88).
Smolensky and Sophomore
Sarah Thompson (Davenport, Iowa) tallied first and second place in the 200 backstroke. Thompson took first with a time of 2:15.06 with Smolensky placing second (2:17.03).
Teammates
Anna Pleban (Seymour, Conn.) and
Nicole Huerta (Santo Domingo, D.R) both contributed two second place finishes. Pleban took second in the 50 freestyle (25.71) and the 100 freestyle with a time of 55.85. Huerta placed second in the 1000 freestyle (11:02.09) and the 500 freestyle (5:22.07).
Senior
Jessica Rickel (Seymour, Conn.) placed second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:11.40.
Southern's relay teams contributed two second place performances. The team of Thompson, Rickel, Thomas, and Pleban placed second in the 400 medley relay with a final time of. 4:06.95. Thompson also teamed up with Huerta along with Junior
Nicole Caron (Marlboro, Mass.) and Senior
Meghan Fay (Branford, Conn.) to capture second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:45.95).
The Owls diving team swept Connecticut College taking first, second and third place in the one meter diving event. Senior
Emily Rapuano (Seymour, Conn.) placed first with a score of 203.73. Sophomores
Laura Richard (Trumbull, Conn.) took second (181.57) and
Ashley Thomas (Oakville, Conn.) captured third (176.78).
Southern is back in action at home Saturday, Jan. 21 against West Chester University of Pennsylvania. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
