QUEENS, N.Y.- The Southern Connecticut State University women's swimming and diving team defeated Queens College Wednesday afternoon, 132-87.

The Owls started off strong with a first place finish in the 200 yard medley (2:00.65) led by Kerry Sullivan (Acton, Mass.), Amber Bjerke (Seymour, Conn.) , Shannen Barnard (Niantic, Conn.) and Rhiannon Urciuoli (Seymour, Conn.)

For the 1000 yard freestyle Kristen Schmid (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and teammate Nina Brandi (Hamden, Conn.) captured first and second place. Schmid finished with a time of 11:44.78 and Brandi hit the wall with a time of 11:56.69. Brandi also added a first place finish in the 500 yard freestyle (5:49.32).

Southern continued to have strong finishes as Caitlyn Salter (Burlington, Conn.) and Rhiannon Urciuoli notched first and second place in the 200 yard freestyle. Salter placed first with a time of 2:08.45 while Urciuoli clocked in at 2:11.86.

Teammates Sarah Thompson (Davenport, Iowa) and Christine Katrenya (Oxford, Conn.) also led the Owls' pace for points as the tandem took first and second place in the 50 yard freestyle. Thompson took first with a final time of 27.07 and Katreyna finished second with a time of 27.87. Katreyna also notched a first place finish in the 100 yard backstroke (1:07.31).

Thompson struck again in the 100 yard freestyle (58.32) with a first place finish. Barnard followed suit tallying second place with a final team of 1:00.58.

Courtney Silva (Burnsville, Minn.) chipped in with a pair second place performances in the 200 individual medley (2:21.99) and the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:04.68.

The Owls' diving team of Ashley Thomas (Oakville, Conn.) and Laura Richard (Trumbull, Conn.) took first and second place in the one meter diving event. Richard placed first with a score of 1:46.35. Thomas placed second with a score of 1:45.65.


The Owls begin the the Northeast-10 Championships Thursday, Feb. 2.
