Volleyball Finishes Regular Season Splitting a Pair of Matches at NYIT

The Owls finish the regular season 23-10 and look forward to hosting a Northeast-10 Conference Championship Quarterfinals against St. Rose on Tuesday.

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. –The Southern Connecticut State University volleyball captured their 23rd win of the season as part of a tri-match held on the NYIT campus in Old Westbury, N.Y. earlier today. The Owls split a pair of matches which included a 3-0 victory over Mercy followed by a 3-0 loss to host NYIT.
 
In the first match against Mercy, Lauren McVey (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) registered her 13th double-double of the season and tied fellow teammate Kimberly Lachowicz (Mansfield, Texas) for the team lead in that category with a 17 dig and 15 kill performance. Syriah Celestine (Greenlawn, N.Y.) went 11-for-18 on kills with a match-high 0.611 hitting percentage and added three blocks. Sarah Beres (Ellington, Conn.) had 10 kills with five digs and two block assists. Morgan Carman (Mesa, Ariz.) tallied 11 digs on the day. Lachowicz assisted 41 points for the Owls to go alongside seven digs. Kelly Gunneson (Cheshire, Conn.) had eight kills with five digs with a block assist to her credit.


In the first set, the Owls trailed early behind 7-5 before they ran away with it at a score of 25-14. Mercy erased a 19-11 deficit with a. 8-0 run before kills by Celestine and McVey put the set away at 26-24. The third set ended by a score of 25-22.
 
In the match against NYIT, Gunneson contributed six kills with a 0.429-hitting percentage, while McVey added six kills and six digs. Carman had a team-high eight digs. Taylor Carlson (Centennial, Colo.) tallied 11 assists for the Owls.
 
The match ended by a final score of 3-0 (25-11, 25-11, 25-23.) The Owls found themselves up 20-17 in the third but could not capitalize on the opportunity.
 
The Owls finished the regular season 23-10.
 
The Owls will host Saint Rose in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship Quarterfinals to be held on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
