LOWELL, Mass. – Freshman guard
Tylon Smith (Manchester, Conn.) scored a career-high 25 points and added five rebounds and four assists, but the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team dropped its Northeast-10 Conference Tournament quarterfinal contest to UMass-Lowell on Sunday afternoon, 86-68.
The Owls close the season with a 14-13 overall mark, good for the program's first winning season since the 2001-02 season. UML improved to 18-9 and moved onto the semifinals.
Luke Houston (Pearl River, N.Y.) and
Dominique Langston (Bridgeport, Conn.) each added a dozen for the Owls. Langston also finished with seven rebounds.
Smith had 21 points in the first half for the Owls. UMass-Lowell scored the first eight points and held a 14-4 lead after four minutes of play. Southern Connecticut responded with a 20-7 run to close within two, 21-19, with 9:27 to go in the opening half.
The River Hawks closed the half on a 24-10 spurt to take a 45-29 lead into halftime and held on in the second half.
