Langston Reaches 1,000 Points; Owls Fall In Overtime To UMass-Lowell, 98-94

LOWELL, Mass. - Four players were in double-digits, but the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team was defeated by UMass-Lowell in overtime, 98-94, in a Northeast-10 Conference game in Lowell, Mass.

UMass-Lowell (10-3, 6-3 NE-10) had five players in double-digits. Akeem Williams led with 26 points and five rebounds. Antonio Bivins had a double-double with 25 points and 12 rebounds.

Trevon Hamlet (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Owls (8-5, 5-4 NE-10) with 28 points and eight rebounds. Greg Langston (Stratford, Conn.) also had 20 points and six rebounds to reach the 1,000-point plateau.

UMass-Lowell controlled the early portion of the game with a big lead. Williams gave UMass-Lowell a 24-16 lead after a layup plus a free-throw.

The Owls fought back and would go ahead 29-28 after Tylon Smith (Manchester, Conn.) made a layup.

UMass-Lowell would take again control before halftime to lead 49-42.

In the second half, UMass-Lowell took early control, but the Owls would not go away.

Smith put the Owls ahead 67-66 after a layup following a steal with 7:06 remaining.

Rashamell Vereen (Meriden, Conn.) then gave the Owls a 78-73 lead with 3:00 remaining after his own steal and dunk. SCSU would then try to control the remaining minutes of the half.

After UMass-Lowell's Williams tied the game at 82 with two free-throws, Vereen gave the Owls a 84-82 lead with a layup and 41 seconds remaining.

Smith made it 85-82 making one of his two free-throws with 15 seconds remaining.

Bivins then missed a three-pointer on the final possession, but Kennedy Chukwuocha go the offensive rebound and hit a three-pointer as time expired to send the game to overtime.

In overtime, UMass-Lowell quickly opened up the lead to 91-85 with 3:28 remaining after Williams hit a jumper.

The Owls got within 91-88 with 2:13 left, but could not get closer in the game.
